Oh, yeah I have been thinking the same about just getting adjustable arms. Haha, damn Americans! I cant wait to get away from the engine and onto the fun stuff.

I have been busy stripping down my dead beemer, but I now have pretty much all the engine parts I need, so no more excuse! - I need to cover some ground and get this engine in before winter I think.

So got some slings, and a load lever so I will hopefully be less likely to mangle the s12. Pretty chuffed with them.

I got my new OEM water pump fitted, making the rest of the engine look even more like ass than it did before. I think I will take off all the pulleys, try and do some more cleaning, sandblast the pulleys and spray them black.

The new turbo etc all back together and fitted, hopefully that will all be good for atleast a little while.

And I took off the flywheel and clutch again, as I bought some ARP studs - was getting paranoid about having reused the original bolts.

So thats it for now, hopefully I will get a chance this weekend to get through the majority of the engine stuff. Something always gets in the way though... Next weekend, weather deppendant, I would like to get the CA18 out. Haha, just to feed the illusion that I am getting close to having a running car.

I have lots of front end goodies on the way, including some z32 calipers, that probably wont fit inside my wheels. Cant wait!

Well, Today was a bad day. Basicly found out that my SR is a goner, massive damage to the cams and metal in the oil. Explains why the engine was running like dirt in the s14.

So I will have to wait and source a new one, not what I wanted to be doing at all...

I gave me cheapo sand blaster a go today on the rocker, and it seemed to work okay (for a £10 peice of kit) but I ran out of sand.

I got a quote from a local welder on doing the bad bits of the s12, and it was way out of my price range too. So I will have a go myself, and try not to burn the car to the ground in the process. Hopefully the weather will be nice tomorrow so I can strip out the seats and carpets, see what that does for my access. Then if I am feeling brave I will start grinding back that rust and see the extent of the damage.

Not a good day at all...

Dirt!!!! You checked the bottom end? Maybe ok? Then u just need new cams ? And possible head work? I dunno maybe something is salvageable.

Could maybe be salvaged, but with no other car now and massive drift cravings, I need to get a new engine asap and get this thing on the road! =D

Also CBA with this becoming an engine rebuild thread...

Well, after everything messed up my plans yesterday. I decided to screw the old plan and move onto the shell since I have no engine atm anyway.

Got the car jacked up next to my daily (also off the road waiting on an oil cooler)

Got all the interior stripped to look for rust, and lower the chances of setting the whole thing on fire...

Found piles of eaten seeds, but no shit or animals. Pretty cool.

Found that a previous owner had wrecked a bolt that was suppsed to be holding on the seat, nice weight reduction mod there!

Then the fun bit, find and stab all the rust!

Looks pretty bad, but I think I can fix it. Bought some 1mm sheet in B&Q and did a load of test welds, I think I have found the settings that are most appropriate now, and was getting some good even penitration.

So it should be good enough to learn and get the job done, I like to learn by jumping in at the deep end...and I have a fire extingusher just incase...

    Rust Battle!

Nothing too fancy here, just been cutting out rust.
Luckily the inner sill isn't too bad, just a small bit below the Subframe mount that needs done...hopefully I wont have to drop it for access, we will see!

Quite a few bits and bobs to do, and like I said, I have zero actual welding experience on cars. But that is the risk/reward fun of projects I suppose!

Going to get all the stuff to seal and treat the metal for this weekend, hopefully it will be nice weather so I can get some of it back together. Haha, I will feel much better then!

Good stuff. The thing i hate about welding is not the actual welding itself but the cutting out and trimming pieces to fit exactly(you can use little magnets and these aircraft clip pins, forget what theyre called, cle clips maybe). Make suure you tack it in at oposite ends to keep distortion down, im sure you know all this though. At least your doing it yourself, last year i payed some "specialist" vw garage to put some panels into my custom t25. Oh boy did they do a bad job, totally ripped me off! I have complete confidence your welding will be better than theirs!! Also weld through primer is good too this way you can coat the back of panels before u weld them in.

Yeah, I have been doing loads of reading and have ordered about £70 worth of crap to hopefully do an acceptable job in protecting it - Thanks for the tips though!

Likewise, I hate these bodge jobs I have seen "professionals" do for crazy money to get cars through MOTs. And all they seem to-do is just weld a plate of metal over rust, then 2 years later the car is pretty much beyond repair having rotted from the inside out.

So even though I am likely to crash it at a drift day anyway, I'd much rather know that I have done the job the right way, and that it could actually last. Haha, fingers crossed on that one though...

Yay! New engine paid for, completely stock S14 engine from a DD with 112,000 miles on it and 140+ compression even across all cylinders, turbo, ecu and loom for £900.

Hopefully it wont be a dud like this one...

Since I bought It, It has certainly tripled in cost...value however, would imply that I could see a return on that investment! Haha, so no-such luck there. XD

If you ever need any help with anything dude give me a PM/call. I assisted my mate with his SR S12 build. It will be a pain in the ass but it will be worth it!

Ah yeah, I have seen that car before on facebook, I tried looking for it again a while later but couldn't find it or the owner having forgotten where I had seen it.

Am I right in thinking it has an S13 rear sub-frame too? Or was it just custom turrets and rear coilovers? - Either way, how bad was that todo??

Also, Did you guys just use the S14 loom and wire from there to the existing S12 stuff, or did you make a new loom and just pin for the stuff you needed?

Sorry to bombard you with questions...Thanks!

    No worries mate

It has a S13 rear subframe with custom made turrets (they wont line up with the originals turrets). They only took a day to make up and weld in. - I'll upload some pics later.

We used a S14a loom and denats 14a ECU and kept as much of the S12 loom as possible. It's all working fine together and we managed to keep all of the original functions.

I've got my car in the shed now, thought it is not a flat or solid floor, so it is very sketchy just getting the car jacked up. Beats working in the rain however!

I Think I am done with the inner sill now, mostly. I found this to be a total nightmare however, I am using a gasless mig, and found it to be flawless on 1mm sheet I bought, with a good setup. But since the metal on these sills has weekend and thinned by rust, it is half or less of that thickness. And my flux-cored wire is just too damn hot, even on the lowest settings and a low wire speed, anything more than a fraction of second on it was just blowing big holes through it, So I basicly had to dab these small weak dots of weld over all the edges of the weak metal until I had built it up enough to work with, then go back round later with a setting high enough to penetrate all the blobs. I would convert it to gas, but I don't think I have the budget for it at the moment. I also couldn't cut out much higher without getting to the plated mounts for the subframe, I cant risk opening a potential can of worms by touching that at the moment either. So this will have to do for now. Hopefully it will be enough to get it through its mot. Then I will redo them if and when I do a subframe swap.

The car has also (I think) lost two cylinders...I will write about that after I do a compression test however. Haha, so much work to do on this car! - I still don't hate it yet.

I have gotten a bit more of the welding done now. Inner Sill is done (horrible blobby welds were added on just to reinforce the weak metal, as I didn't want to cut any higher up as it would hit the sub frame mounts) - After that, I converted my welder over to disposable gas tanks, tbh, I am finding the gas flow through the small regulator very inconsistent, I get no gas, or full gas when turned right to the very end. Despite this, I do now have much better control with the new setup, and it wasn't just blowing holes through the car like the fluxcore did. So win on that front at least! Haha, and I found a use for some old speaker magnets.

    My Highly sterilized spray booth...

    Speaker magnet grips

Ground down, and again I added some bits where I saw it was pretty thin.

Added on the lower section of the inner well separately as the shape would have just been too hard to make in one go. Pretty chuffed that I was able to keep the original shape though at least.

The next bit will probably be the hardest as I have no reference to make a template from, so I will just have to take intelligent guesses and hope for the best, the good thing is that I have trim that covers it, so it doesn't really have to be perfect.

The S14 coil-overs I am hoping to use were jammed solid, and no amount of smashing it with a hammer, heat or penetrating fluid was moving it. So I left it in cheapo diet cola for 3 days.

Amazingly, it did actually loosen it off! - Still didn't make it easy, and it still pulled a thread out with it. Also, the main locking collar is refusing to loosen, so I am looking for a spare perch so that I can hopefully just cut this one off...haha, getting there.

Best news yet though, my new engine is meant to be arriving at some point today. Hoping it won't be an 18 tonne lorry...
