Has America hit the oil jackpot?

I am hearing through a colleague that back in 2006 the US discovered a MASSIVE amount of oil under colorado... and supposedly the gov kept a lid on it since back in the 1930's!. They estimate there could be up to 2 TRILLION barrels of oil there - which overshadows all the middle east by billions!!!

    been reading about it :

    http://www.americanchronicle.com/art...articleID=8433

Dunno if this is old news to you guys but i was just passed it and thought if this is the case this could change the world... russia and the middle east will suddenly have a serious rival on their hands... oil prices might drop through the floor as competition heats up...on the other hand it could cause increased tension if the US starts to wave its sabre in the knowledge it can be self reliant for the forseeable future....

Maybe that V8 wont be so expensive to run after all

    Very interesting

Sweet, so I shouldn't have to drive an electric car in my lifetime Hopefully it's true and prices drop Then I can sell my Micra commuter and buy a BMW 750i as my new commuter

nah America would stockpile it all until the rest of the world has run out then give it out to its "friends" in dribs and drabs at massively inflated prices.

Two small issues spring to mind.

Firstly, it's not oil, it's oilsand.

Secondly, the first time I saw it it was being touted for part of a stock scam. The oil isn't financially viable to extract at the moment, and probably won't be for some time, so they were trying to use it for a pump-and-dump scam on a company involved in it.

It won't make the price of oil drop, in fact it's only when the price of oil goes up that it's economically feasible to use it.

    Sorry

    Sorry

Got my hopes up before reading that

I nearly had to use bp ultimate the other day as I thought I was gonna run out if fuel. At 106.9p a litre I chanced it to the shell garage, luckily I was ok

I take it you mean this oilshale deposit in particular rather than oilshale as a whole? as the Chinese and Canadians are working huge fields of oilshale right now quite happily.

    Somewhere between the two really.

I'm not sure about the Chinese deposits, but Canada's are nice and close to the surface, which makes conventional mining easy to do and the extraction cheap and free from danger (well, relatively). However, they're still more expensive end-to-end that crude, and it produces heavier fractions which aren't so good for petrol.

This deposit, from what I recall, is buried under vast amounts of the Rockies, which makes it really hard to get to and dangerous to impossible to mine. I think there are people trying to work on methods of extracting the oil in the sands without mining it, or in fact digging it up at all, but I think they're still a way away from being viable.

Yeah I'd agree with that, if they could do it easily and cheaply right now they'd be crowing about how amazingly good they are.

I thought Canada has the biggest reserves of oil, it's just all in that oil shale stuff.

It wouldn't surprise me if america had the reserves. lets face it, it it was discovered in the early 30's, no one would want to have invested in it because of the great depression. Also, Texas was pumping out a shed load of cheap oil, why would they want more? Save it for the future etc.

On the other hand, there is a load of crap on the net and if you search in google, most the stories seem to be worded the same

I dunno, there would still be the white-power sites and the ones where 13yr olds called each other 'faggot' all day because they don't like the same anime.
