It's more likely that whoever sent the goods used the wrong taric code.

You dont have to pay vat on second hand goods if the parts are coming from the EU and the supplier can send the original bill of sale proving that the applicable tax was paid in the country where it was first purchased.

    Hmm cheers both.

So that's basically a yes then, cos a) you are probably never going to buy something S/H within the EU, b) even if you did you'd have bugger all chance of the seller having hte original receipt.

I got told by C&E (after moaning like buggery), that anything from anywhere (outside of the UK), be it second-hand or whatever is VAT chargable!

Unless you can convince them to send it as a pressie!!!!!

    Pointblank,

Thats borrocks, if it comes from within the EU then the vat (or the equivilent of vat) has already been paid so you dont have to pay it again when the goods land in the UK. Thats the whole point of the EU, to make trading between countries easier.

That said, why do you have to pay vat on a 2nd hand commercial vehicle, regardless of your entitlement to claim it back. As an example

I do not think you need to pay VAT on a second hand item if you can prove that you owned it for at least 6 months (or so). So if you can get the vendor to give you the original receipt then you should be in the clear.

might get away with it for personal use, but from a business point of view it aint gonna brush, or if it does, it wont be long before mr vat comes along and bites your arse so be warned do it right or dont come crying as much as i hate to say that

There are different rates for different parts if I understand correctly. Thing is stuff I order is normally just marked up "Auto Parts" on the invoice so it probably does just get charged at that rate. A complete car is indeed 10%.

One I always like is that they charge you VAT on any duty they charge you... Leeches
