    Car Choice Dilemma

Been made redundant but have a couple of offers on the table. Neither has a company car so after nearly 10yrs of not having to worry about my own transport I now need to sort.

    Max budget say 10K
Estate as it needs to fit my bike in the back. I have done the truck thing (last 5yrs) but want something different now.
Circa 75 mile round trip on A/B roads

What say the combined car smarts of sxoc??

Does it really have to be an estate because civic type R's have big boots? Or do you really like to have loads of room.

Don't know why anyone would want to do a 75 mile round trip in a civic type R, each to their own.

How old are we talking for under 10k? and what mileage.

I'd be thinking circa 10 year old 320d estate if I was in that situation doing that mileage.

    Example

problem is all diesel estates will have high mileage or be strong money.

id probably look at mercedes c220d just watch that some estate cars are not really any longer than the hatchback version.

I paid 4300 for a 2012 Golf Diesel estate in November 2019 with 44k on the clock. Apart from an episode with the EGR (expected) and a binding rear caliper (common) it has been faultless.

    It's bland, uninspiring and anonymous.

It is also ridiculously good on diesel, supremely comfortable, practical and doesn't cost the earth to maintain because of the simple and common platform, plus things like being a cheap tyre size.

The way I see it, the daily is a tool to me and I wanted something respectable that had the least chance of screwing me over. And the less I spent on it, the more I could put into hobbies.

TO be fair the little 1.6 mk1 focus we had was the most reliable and uninspiring car ever. A mk1 estate would do the job i guess.

8k, 60k, Manual, 160hp, Zetec S, nice wheels, good colour. Won't let you down and won't cost the earth to repair.

I’ve got one of these. Nice to drive, huge inside, quite a few toys. Mine is the 2.0 which needed a remap to wake it up but I averaged nearly 60mpg on a run the other day.

Wow, the used car market really has gone mental. My Golf, at 4300, I can't find another similar for anything less than 7000. That's mental.

It has gone a bit mad. At least 20-25% price rise. That's what makes the choice so difficult as cheap cars aren't cheap anymore. I hated my old golf, will likely not entertain another. Good car but I found it so uncomfortable.

Just thinking, the Audi A3 i had of the same era was mega comfy, think it was probably just the seat that made the golf horrible.

Keep getting drawn to this. We have had volvos in the family for the last 20yrs in some shape or form (mainly XC90/60, my amazon and a 850T5R back in the day) and something is telling me to pull the trigger as the value will not depreciate too much over the next few years and reliability should be awesome. Am i wrong?

Also feeling this for the boxyness and the fact the radio has been upgraded (if it works and has all the features i need/want).
