    1998 s14a gearbox refurb

Does anybody know somewhere in Essex I can get my 5 speed manual gearbox rebuilt on a 1998 s14a? I have phoned a few places now and they havenít done one before so canít give me a price, or alternatively can you get a rebuild kit for the gearbox? Thanks Rich.

Have you considered doing a 350z 6speed gearbox swap? I know I am not answering your question but might be a consideration. I will be looking into it should be gearbox go bang because the car defo feels like it needs another gear between 2nd and 3rd.

I’d like to stay with the 5 speed really , it occasionally crunches changing into 5th . I’m rebuilding engine atm so while gearbox was out thought may aswell get it refurbished. I’ll give garage d a shout but would prefer somewhere more local in Essex.

cost depends on how knackered it is when they strip it down.

conceptua were selling all the bits to rebuild them but they have a few variations inside them so it would be a pain trying to decide which kit you needed.

Just go to a gearbox reconditioner in your area then.

I've been nursing my gearbox along for years as it was reluctant to change up from 1st to 2nd. I recently had a lot of mechanical work done by a Japanese specialist and they wanted to know when the gearbox oil was last changed. I'm not sure that this is a solution for you, but it turned out to be a solution for me. Fresh gearbox oil did the trick! However I can understand that if there are question marks on your gearbox and you currently have the engine out that maybe it's the right time for a more robust solution than a simple oil change, so forget I've spoken if so.

You don't need to go to Japanese specialists for transmission work.

I'd agree about that - but I think rebuilding my front suspension was better handled by the Japanese specialists and I gave them a number of other jobs to do while the car was with them. Changing the gearbox oil must have been the simplest and it was such a no-brainer in the case of my car that I'm rather aggravated that the garage I have been going to for the last several years didn't ever suggest it. Incidentally, they are not a garage that would likely be interested in a gearbox rebuild, but surely, an oil change wouldn't have been too much trouble for them, particularly as they could have billed me for the work.

If my gearbox ever does go bad beyond needing an oil change, I will seek out a gearbox reconditioner local to me.
