    Shim clearance problems

Hello! been a while, hope all is good around here.

I'm rebuilding my SR and currently shimming the valves. I've got a few surprises with the differences:

    - 3.575 mm
    - 3.300 mm
    - 3.300 mm
    - 2.700 mm

    Rest is good.

Since nissan only does from 2.8mm to 3.2mm. I was wondering if anyone got experience with my only 2 options:

    - Manually filing the valves to fit.
    - Or finding other engine shims with 10mm OD that have the proper height.

I read that harleys have 10mm OD shims from 1.8 to 3.2, is it ok to use that? I would still be missing the 3.3mm and 3.5mm ones though.

Maybe someone knows where to buy some custom shims?

    Any advice is welcome, thanks!

EDIT: just found this which is interesting, http://www.precisionshims.com.au/

any decent machine shop will have a surface grinder that can resize your shims

Nah it's not the shim height i need to reduce, i need higher shims. I can find 2.700mm shims with 10mm OD from motorbikes. But the 3.3 and 3.575 is impossible.

I could find 3.3mm and 3.5mm shims with 9.48mm OD, would it be really bad to use 9.48mm instead of 10mm of OD?

At the moment I'm trying to file off the top of the valve stem, but it's huge pain. I'm just rotating a rod on top with valve lapping compound. I really don't want to take everything appart so if it takes me 1 hours per valve so be it. I'm taking care to do it as square as possible so i'm sure the result will be acceptable but it just takes a long time.

what height are the guides? ive heard of people using guides in both sides instead of a shim and a guide.

All guides are 3mm. yeah they do it along with solid lifters usually. file the rocker arm to fit 2 guides. But since it's 3mm i'm still missing height.

Or try a TVR engine specialist as the AJP shims are very close to that size

The arrow guys did answer, almost 20 bucks a piece and 8 piece minimum order. I will first try reducing the valves manually but it's nice to have the option to get the shims now. Thanks for that!

    It's precision work, heed caution.

Bah, i got 0.02mm off in 2 hours, will take me years, i'm just going to buy them haha. Next time i'll make sure to tell the workshop to adjust the valves while they do the head. Or maybe it will be my chance to do the valve lapping and adjustment myself.
