The Death of Hollywood / Cinema

Was going to start this as a ‘what’s hot to watch on TV in 2021’

But with Covid-19 and Warner deciding to co-release on HBO Max, does anyone see a mid 80’s esque cinema depression happening for the mid term future? Where Home Video kept people away from Cinema?

Marvel’s MCU has pretty much been concluded apart from the odd fill ins and “I will say I was wrong again” always rated Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy over Marvel’s MCU, but and a big but. Watch the MCU in Chronological order, culminating with Avengers End Game. It is pure cinema fun.

Star Wars in the Cinema is all but over for the mid term (just look at Mandalorian - production quality and story surpasses the last 3 Star Wars films)

Apart from Bond and Fast / Furious, what other big franchises are there to keep cinema / pure movie studios going - which is what they have been banking on for the last decade or so. I’d rather go see a musical (but not those ‘modern musicals that change history for the sake of...’)

There is a big shift to TV. Want fantasy, Game of Thrones gave that. Gripping dramas, too many to speak of. Sci Fi, we have the Mandalorian and the Expanse ( not mentioning those Star Trek Series)

Even YouTube has got into the act, yes taken over by Netflix (Cobra Kai)

Anyways what I’m really into at the moment on TV is Your Honor (Imagine Walter White becomes a Judge in New Orleans)

    The Crown

Judging by the amount of Marvel trailers I have seen on the webz media sites recently I would suggest they are just waiting for the end of covid restrictions prior to a cinema release. I agree about the Star Wars franchise. The Mando series is epic compared to everything else outside of the 3 originals and Solo was just poor

I cant see the proposed Batman films really comparing to Nolans trilogy, again they set a bar that I don't think they will get close to again.

Paid subscription TV services are putting a slow end to cinema releases but i still think there will be a place for blockbuster releases as they will still fill the studio coffers. People will still want to see these things in groups but i can see the releases being scarcer.

Trouble with Netflix is they are releasing too much too quickly. Amazon is a very poor relation to Netflix and you have to pay for the good stuff in addition to your monthly subscription.

I agree, you could almost say Netflix is a victim of it’s own success. They have to churn stuff out because they indebted themselves to do it. Catch 22 perhaps

There are 4 films I’m waiting for, but apart from 1 happy to watch the others at home.

I’ve only seen 2 Bond movies in the Cinema (Living Daylights and Casino Royale) I grew up watching Bond on TV so happy to continue.

Never seen a Fast / Furious film at cinema so can watch the next on TV.

Matrix 4 - the original was game changing, so will 4 be as good?

Dune! I would love to see Denis Villeneuve’s take on Dune in IMAX

So apart from Mando (it’s brilliant - the storyline is better than the movies and let’s be fair Jon Favreau is a brilliant film maker) - “The Expanse” was IMHO better as a Sci-Fi because it is closer to home and more realistic scientifically too

Your Honor - as I previously mentioned (Judge Heisenberg)

    The Crown - I’m enjoying

Coyote with Michael Chiklis was good

I’m not into soaps or most US comedies, Americans just don’t get sarcasm or satire as well as us Brits

I am watching Noel Clarke’s Bulletproof - it’s like a British version of “Bad Boys”

Appreciate there have been production issues last year due to COVID-19, but what else is new out there?

I'm a massive movie fan, spent a bloody fortune on the home setup as we used to watch a film almost every night, it was like religious at 9pm - film time

But for the last 3 or 4 yrs it's been getting harder and harder to be excited for a new release, I've got around 2k blu rays in the library, but the additions have been really slow of late, last been disneys new Mulan, which wasn't impressive, but kiddie wanted it.

I do pay for netflix now, and to be fair some films they have made have been great, and some series are impressive..... but I find a lot of series have an impressive start but fade away badly after the second season...

the new Sabrina, The good place, Stranger Things, Atypical, you and big mouth all spring to mind as a good start, but faded fast.

AHS seemed to peak and trough as it goes on, and SOA/Breaking Bad for me started well, lulled, then finished ok.

I'm quite liking the new takes on old at the moment, Joker being a real pleasant surprise.

And some others I've enjoyed: Baby Driver, ready player one, coco, as they are a departure from the usual format.

But there has been some drivel pumped out, I'm not a fan of the F&F series as it just seems forced now to rinse the profits, a lot like Saw ended up... keep pumping them out unnecessary.

As I get older I'm getting more partial to a good game with story, the tomb raider reboot for one, and the last of us are both excellent

Hollywood has become very stale, alot of the big franchises are 10+ movies in now, it's kinda becoming just more of the same.
Add into that the number of poorly made reboots and general lacklustre films, you can see why people aren't about to leave the house and make the trip to the cinema.

Hollywood needs to concentrate on producing interesting, quality films instead of just pushing out generic shite.

So here's the controversial view. They won't, because woke. See evidence: Ghostbusters rehash - go out of their way to make a film that ticks boxes but ultimately appeals to no-one as a result; blame sexism.

Classic example from the other day on BBC:
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-55916772

How many female directors, directors of Asian origin, films about systemic oppression and whether straight males can play LGBT roles and whether disabled characters can only be portrayed by disabled actors.

The only good film I've seen in as long as I can remember is Hillbilly Elergy. Surprise surprise the critics hated it.

The best film I have seen recently is Peanut Butter Falcon which wouldn't have ben improved in any way, shape or form on the big screen.

Its going to have to be epic to get me back to a cinema as you said. New idea, interesting and not generic tosh.

I dont think this will kill off cinemas long term, but short to medium of course it will hurt.

Folk still like going for the spectacle and its worth it when all you have at home is a cheep £299 43inch panel from tescos and no sound system.

That’s the problem though. If you do an LGBTQ film, you are pilloried unless you win an Oscar. I’ve seen a film about West Africa. A boy filmed it with a Go Pro. Broke my heart, it wouldn’t make it into cinema. But, the media seem to want to promote / positively discriminate. Take that new musical.. SIX. About the wives of Henry the Eighth. One song, we are the same. Critics have said it is realistic and true. Sorry. Henry the Eighth did not marry black women, they were treated as slaves then. Women weren’t treated as one, because 2 of them were beheaded: media has a lot to answer for because journalists are too stupid

I haven’t watched a decent movie since Tenet, other than that it’s just popcorn

The whole equality thing does spoil a lot for me when you realise it's just not right for the timelines...

Like the new remake of lady and the tramp, set in 1920s mississippi, I'm sure the very wealthy house did have a black woman in it, but I'm really sure she was not the rich lady with the posh dog sitting infront of the fire relaxing... also a chineese doctor delivering the baby, no chance.

Yes every one now is equal and spread the love round, but don't re write historical times to suit new ideals, plus the more watered down the past becomes with this the more people forget what actually happened and it looses its impact when discussed

Haha this is the same as us! Either a film or a mini-series.

To be honest I am sick and tired of all the super hero flash-bang shite. It's all the same- plot written on a postage stamp and 90 mins of CGI. Yawn.
I've gotten very critical in my old age and much prefer a film/ mini-series with some teeth. Low budget one are generally better as the writing has to be good to make up for lack of budget.

The Boys is excellent even though it is "super heros".
The Crown/ The Queens Gambit/ In the Line of Duty/ Hinterland/ there are some topnotch mini-series out there.

I been watching a lot of films from the 1970s/80s/90s of late. When the art of film making was still there. Most of the new film I find as drivel.

Actually for films- Hillbilly Elergy was good. It was a film with some teeth, which is surprising for a Ron Howard film as he usually makes middle of the road non-offensive stuff. Apprently the book is even way better, but very good film.
Jo Jo Rabbit was also good, quirky and a brave move to make such an odd ball film in this day of "will it make millions?"

Yeah it can get a bit grating alright especially with "historical or period" based stuff.

Have you seen the "new" MacGyver from a year or two back? It's actually funny as they ticked every single possible box apart from Native American! Forced over the PCism.

Baby Driver, 1917...erm...!? Can't think of much else that's really delivered. Both of those films are brilliant mind. Gutted I missed seeing 1917 in the cinema now. Even Tarentino's latest offering was boring and pointless. Couldn't get into The Gentleman, just felt like a poor mans Snatch. Bond died years ago. Really not a fan of Daniel 'zero charm or charisma' Craigs portrayal. MCU is done and dusted. Dune will probably be quite the spectacle but then BR 2049 was only OK. Pattinson as Batman looks interesting. Oh, The Devil All the Time was good. Tom Holland for me is turning into a bit of a jake gyllenhaal, at least I hope so. Jake G's been in some great movies. End of Watch, Nightcrawler, Enemy...

I really wanted to like 1917....

I don't know of it was something to do with my projector or that I streamed it from amazon - but I found the CGI in the last few battle scenes to look so poor it spoilt it, it looked like what you would find in the special features deleted scenes... almost there, but not got the final going over with textures or shadows.

Hack saw ridge has been one of my favorite war movie of late.

As I'm getting older I'm looking more for quirks or details in films to raise them up, something you know a lot of thoughts gon into it..... not a poor chaining of events for a franchise like F&F. I think the MCU worked it well, but that should be done now, the tube is finished, put it in the bin, don't squeeze every last drop.

Baby driver - love the way the soundtrack was intergrated to the action ad story.

Ready player one - just the amount of cameos and how they were "right" when used. Also a believable view of a possible future.

Back to the future - one of the Kings in regards detail, like the way "twin pines mall" turns into "lone pine mall" after marty drives over a tree in the past.

The golden age really has to be the 70s 80s 90s blockbuster after blockbuster, and dwindling since.

    Clockwork orange
    The shining
    Alien
    BTTF
    Star wars originals
    Godfather
    Good fellas
    Pulp fiction
    Matrix
    Blade
    Fight club

All genre defining and original films not really seen before.

What CGI did you find poor? Considering there was very little CGI used and it was sometimes used where it was nearly impossible to see. I'm really curious, got a link to the scene on YouTube or something? I seen 1917 in the cinema and was in awe the entire way through.

I really wanted to love 1917 as well. Finally the chance to make a WW1 with a big budget and modern technology!! And....................... what a wasted opportunity! While it was well made, artistically filmed and "enjoyable", it was nothing got to do with WW1. It was an Indiana Jones type adventure romp set in WW1. I enjoyed it, but at the same time was seriously disappointed as the wasted opportunity.
The beautiful shots of his running beside the trenches and freshly manicured green grass, the handy footpath through no-man's land..... all art over substance. What a wasted opportunity of making an actual WW1 film depicting the reality. :-(

The Joker was the last film in the cinema that stood out to me, that was an excellent film. It reminded me alot of Taxi Driver, the same 1970s dirty New York feel and dark atmosphere and tension throughout the film.
