One of the biggest....... pretty much totally useless, we only pay for the legal insurance.
As is the case for most utilities.

I don't believe that your union allowed your company to force you to not opt out of the WTR.
It is literally why unions exist.
They could not force you to opt out
Your mistake wasn't getting decent legal representation
I think now they can force you - why is that? Oh because we don't have European employment law.
when they decide to outsource all of you , TUPE won't matter.....
But we all voted leave to keep those nasty immigrants out
WTD is not yet repealed so plenty of time to sign into it, but as eluded to, likely to not be here much longer.
Hope you're indispensable or your company has integrity otherwise expect tough times.
50+ hr weeks and 24hr shifts are pretty normal in our industry.
Although electric cars are doing a great job of destroying the network, the biggest issue is the total lack of maintenance and investment since privatisation.
All the published figures look great for energy companies, but the reality is most places are running on 1970s gear that hasn't even been squirted with wd4o for the last 10yrs.

50+ hours may not be unusual and would require opting out.
But the fact is I do not believe you had union representation present while the employer forced you to opt out.
Suppose "very strongly implied the job would not be worth having if you didnt" is more correct a term....
Unite are our biggest union, prospect are second, both totally useless.
They can't even negotiate everyone to be on the same terms for doing the same job.... there's £20k difference across our office, then other benefits are sporadic - company cars etc.
And if your ever in a disciplinary hearing, usually the advice us to just have the bollocking and forget about it,
But this is drifting wildly off topic....

Here is a good example of my personal findings of small businesses, and inconvenience to me trying to get UK stuff. :-(
Small specialist book supplier, stuffed as he can no longer afford to ship outside the UK. :-( Meaning, that us outside the UK can't get his goods. :-(

Similar was echoed by my wife's suppliers who who were going mad at losing their foreign buyers, when she was telling them that she had to stop using them. The small guys always get fooked.
I sympathise with him, it is still possible for him to trade but if it's just too expensive then it's indicative of the challenges everyone is facing. Entirely unnecessary.
In March 2021 it looks like 1 in 4 businesses had packed up EU customers

And compounded by bastard courier companies with their bullsh1t "Brexit management fees" added on top.
Yes but don't you feel better now you've got your sovereignty back?
Doc you're looking at it all wrong. All he has to do is follow the DIT's official advice and set up a sub-company in the EU.
It's simple.
Well, isn't that just brilliant
From my experience American owners are way worse than euro owners.... who were apparently a lot worse than when we were a UK national company....
Even when we were in the EU our American overlords seemed to legitimately put everyone on varying reward packages for the same job, offer out different training packages for the same job roles and get everyone out of the EWTD to allow an entire department to close (combining faults and new connection companies into one, paid connections in the day, faults all night - same people working)
The best con they have going at the moment is sending women on university courses to "be more diverse" but then paying them 20k less than the blokes doing the same job.
It's now near impossible to gain a promotion unless you fit into a "integrity" or "diversionary" category.
I raised the point on a job application, if we want to be inclusive etc. Then the question of male/female, black/white, Christian/Muslim etc shouldn't even be included on the form.... the fact that it is means its being used in some kind of spreadsheet somewhere.
In a twisted and messed up way, in big companies getting away from all the equality rules might actually be beneficial to the workforce, our place is a work-farce after the last 10 yrs as qualified and experienced men have been overlooked for promotion to portray an image of inclusion.
And don't think I'm somekind of racist sexist idiot for the above, I would love to see more diversity and inclusion...... but it should start with apprenticeships and working thier way up.
Not picking a random 30yr old woman who has been working a call centre for 10yrs and sending them on an electrical course to pretend they know how it works but keeping the pay down because they can never meet all the criteria to move up the salary scale
