Too much oil after oil change?

    Hi all

seem to have gone over the high mark on the dipstick following an oil change, you can see in the picture that its just under the right side of the H mark

understand its bad for the sr20 to overfill in terms of pressure on the engine? Car hasn't been started since the oil change, plan was to prime it next with fuel pump fuse removed

car is on the level now (it wasn't when I filled it!) I know dipsticks aren't the most accurate measurement, I tried to estimate 3.7L on filling

guess I could try to loosen the sump bolt a little and drain a bit out?

    Hi Chris
I topped off a bit of oil into the filter before installing it yes, I included that in the 3.7L
would what I put in the filter be registering on the dipstick, too late to drain the filter?
I'm too far over the high mark right now right?

It doesn't take much to just drain the oil into a clean pan and refill for piece of mind

do you mean drain it all out into a clean pan and then refill it to the right amount with what I drained?
was thinking of just undoing the pan bolt so that a little drips out and then retightening as opposed to draining it all again

I mean drain it all out into a clean container so it can be reused to refill again. Just drain the oil the normal way via the sump plug like a normal oil change

Just undo the filter and drain a bit off. Way too much effort to drain the lot.

that was the question really, does the oil in the filter register on the dipstick?

Oil in the filter is on top of what’s on the dipstick

    got it Chris thanks....quick update...
I let a bit of oil out but these dipsticks must must read high?
I measured half a ltr left in the new 4 ltr bottle i poured in
This means at most i poured in 3.5 liters plus I spilt a bit too so its less than that
workshop manual says 3.5 with no filter change and 3.7 with filter change
car is flat and dipstick read some way over the high mark

You never get all the oil out, that's where your extra probably came from.

yeah i wondered that but in this case i started out with a crushed oil pan so the entire lower pan was off and draining for about 2 weeks before i replaced it!
That said though it was never on a level until I noticed the over read on the dipstick so could be it wasnt fully drained

I think next oil change I will measure out 3.5 but remember to drain and measure on the level!

I've had engines drain for months, turn the block upside-down and oil gushes out over the floor. It has ways to hide.

That happened to me before, I measures the exact amount and the dip stick read too high! FFS! So I just drained a bit out making sure not to let the bung slip out of my oily fingers! ;-)

sounds like I'm not the only one to have done this then!
so I ended up draining it all out in the end and refilling so I could take extra care on the refill and make sure car was on a level etc.
I filled it 1/2 ltr at a time
just under 3 ltr went in and the dipstick was bang on the high mark
so if capacity is 3.5 ltr there must have been about 1/2 ltr undrained which seems high?
then again i drained without oil warmed up (as my starting point was a crushed pan which i didn't want to start until repaired)
one thing i noticed is the orientation of the dipstick makes a difference, depending on which way round its inserted the reading varies!
