    Relay functions

Have recently had an issue with car not starting. turned out to be faulty relay. Diagnosed by swapping relays over. Faulty one was IGN COIL . Anyone know what EGi controls, what EGI pump controls & what H/L RET CONT contols?

Reason I ask is that everything still appears to work even with faulty relay in any of these 3 other places!!

    Thanks

maybe the dodgy relay is stuck closed so permanently switched on. EGI is basically your ignition circuit, then other is fuel pump then headlamp retract control.

EGI (green) feeds power from ign switch to the ignition coils. It is switched on by the ECCS relay.

EGI pump (green), powers fuel pump and the bi-metal strip heater in air regulator under the throttle. Its coil is switched by the ECU when the CAS is turned. If this is on all the time the engine will be hard to start if ignition was left on for about 3-5 min before cranking as the air reg will be shut. A fuel pump that runs when engine is not running is dangerous as it can dump fuel out of a severed hose. It should run the fuel pump for 5 secs when ign is switched on to prime the fuel system.

H/L RET CONT (grey), "relay 4" is 2 pole. Normally powers the headlamps to raised position, when on it feeds "relay 3" to lower headlamps. It should be impossible to fit a green relay in this location or fit the grey relay in the other 3 positions that take green relays.

The 3rd green relay is "ECCS" this powers the external outputs of ECU, CAS and AFM after ECU has self tested.

Scrap yards were full of Nissans with green relays but that vintage of Nissan may be quite rare now.

Thanks for the detailed info- I managed to get 3 from a local Nissancentric scrapyard- but they have no more!
