    gearbox upgrade - RB25 vs CD009

    hi all,

Just wondering if people have any experience with gearbox upgrades for an s14, and the two choices seem to be RB25 and CD009

i have had a RB25 conversion waiting for a while now (box, shifter conversion plate, slave, prop) , but the price of rb gearboxes have gone through the roof, so would virtualy cover the cost of the cd009, so its tempting to get the newer box, not having to cut the shifter hole unlike the RB box and the 6spd is really appealing

anyone have any experience with either swap?

Have you considered a Giken 5 gear or 3 gear kit? £2100 landed for a 5 gear kit these days

Aren’t the ratings on the gilken set similar to Oem? If I was spending that much I’d want a gearbox that’ll easily handle the power.

What power you aiming for? From being at a lot of drift days the rb box isn't all that much stronger than a stock sr, seen a lot of them in pieces, albeit generally in cars with near 400hp generally at comps when people are running super grippy tyres so may not be soo much of an issue for general use and practice days with normal tyres. Cd009 on the other hand if you get the newer version seems to be pretty indestructible. It is a MASSIVE box though so be prepared for some tunnel bashing to make it fit nice.

    Good luck either way,

P.S. Did you sell that blue caged shell in the end?

    Cheers

Not sure where you got that idea from but they're considerably stronger, rated to 600bhp for SR20 applications.

Do they upgrade the input shaft?

Yep, the 5 gear kit comes with the reinforced input shaft and you can add a reinforced main shaft.

The 3 gear kit comes with neither, but has the input as an option.

Does anyone know how difficult a job it would be to fit an OS Gilken gear set? Does it need crazy specialist tools and a PHD in gearboxes?

Given that finding decent SR gearboxes is getting more difficult, and every alternative swap option appears to have some complications (and quite a lot of expense) the OSG upgrade seems an attractive option.

It's a straight swap kit but you'd still need to know how a gearbox went together. Job for a transmission specialist IMO. And your donor box would need to be in good working order, unless you went for new standard parts.

Also bear in mind, Giken kits are close ratio kits. Not standard ratios.

Yes, the closer ratios would be a bonus, for my track car anyway, especially since it looks like 1-3 are shorter but 5th is actually longer geared. So faster acceleration in the gears most used on track but better cruising on the way to and from the track!

I’ve got all the ratios noted down for the different boxes and the Giken kit and a transmission calculator to show you what it would do to your car.

    Happy to mail it.

Also, you can get yourself a nice loan offer from a nearby lender

I appreciate the encouragement! I think I'd wait until my box fails before going down such a big job (for me at least).

These days I'd be looking at a BMW gearbox with PMC adaptor.

I’ve heard the BMW GS6-53DZ gearbox is possible but it’s from diesel cars so couldn’t get my heard around the ratios and if they would work with on a street car

the bmw boxes tend to have rubbish ratios which don't really work with R200 diff ratios, ive seen people stick 350z diffs in to help combat this.

I was under the impression the cd09 hung down low under the car when mated to the back of an sr20 in an S-chassis.

Running a Z32 box here at 400lbft for around 15,000 miles of hard driving now.

Modified the shift linkage so no cutting was required and it’s in stock position but around 1” to the left.

1st and 5th are longer than the stock box which are both useful to me.

I need to get under my Elgrand and see what diff it uses (I think the housing is definitely different as it has a pair of ABS sensors in there so there's definitely differences but wonder if bits can be swapped over).

that's a 3.1ish ratio from memory, so would allow use of some odd boxes.
    white '94 s13 200sx scrapped - mapped to 1.45bar. OS giken box, garrett GT2876R, 950cc injectors, ORC twin plate, nistune. 349bhp/325lbft @ 1.3bar CA18DET
