I'd take this over most Escorts, though.

The Mk3?
Never driven one, but every sporty Mk3/4 I've driven felt like the rubber bushes in the suspension/steering were binding and fighting you.
A friend of my dads has a Mk1 Escort RS1600 made into a Gp4 rep with a 2 litre BDG on twin 48s. If Photobucket starts working I'll put up a photo. I'd have that over the Shoveit, but I think it's worth somewhere north of £100k now
Edit, nope PB gone to shit

They do look great. I think they have different suspension to the others, though I'm sure someone will know better.
Must admit, I've heard that for many years, but was doubtful purely because of the numbers produced.
If it was a stiffer front ARB, that's a terrible idea on a FWD car.
I certainly don't recall that it was - the Ford guys I used to knock around in used to strip RS1600's that weren't in great shape to spruce up their XR's, so I'd be amazed if they'd have rekt a seamwelded shell for the sake of a few bits of bodywork need doing otherwise.

The fact they mention the shell was seam welded by someone else also suggests it wasn't from factory.
Just from memory so bound to be wrong, wasn't it something like strut tops, steering rack mounts and lower arms? Not seam welding as we would think, but you would notice a difference on a floppy eighties hatch. 10+ years later with knackered bushes and ball joints you'd not notice a difference between it and a regular XR3i.
Apologies for the awful quality, had to grab the thumbnails from PB. Originals are about 3 PCs ago.
Run cambelt covers people. A no issues rebuild was £5k after a stone got wedged in.

Cost him something like £65k to build in the noughties and that's because he did a lot of the work himself.
If I remember correctly the stats were something like 250bhp, 875 Kg and geared to do 118. Also had a dog box, so the experience was Whine, bang, whine bang, Jeeeeesus Christ
