Which car manufacturer is most iconic ?

I’ve been thinking lately about how brilliant Nissan is, they’ve built so many tuner car wet dreams.

    S bodies
    Fairlady/Z’s
    Skylines

What other car companies have consistently produced sports cars through various generations into the modern day that can be considered iconic? Ok they aren’t making s bodies anymore but the rumour mill keeps turning, an s16 could be on the way!

Is Nissan no. 1? Clearly this is subjective but I’m struggling to think of any other brand that can complete?

Porsche clearly has the 911 and BMW’s various M cars but I’m not sure they hold the same iconic tuner status, who else has the range and consistency Nissan has?

As an iconic brand, I don’t think anyone could compete with Ferrari.

    For tuning, perhaps Ford...

Depends on the definition of iconic.
Astons are iconic due to their gorgeous designs and role in the James Bond films.
Subaru/Mitsubishi are iconic due to the rallying pedigree.
Nissan is iconic due to drifting and the GT-R.
Ford is iconic because of a certain race car and what it achieved and the Mustang/Thunderbird and the aussie monsters it has produced and what Ash said.
Alfa Romeo is iconic due to the sumptuous styling of pretty much every model they have released.
Volvo is iconic because 90's BTCC

The list goes on and different people can argue the degree of iconic-ness for every brand going.

    All personal opinion obvs

I think we forgot a brand.

Lancia for Rallying and also for making some beautiful cars (although they make turds now)

    As for Ford and tuning.

In the UK no brand has attracted the Tuning scene more than Ford IMHO.

Hell they even have their own tuner magazines. Nismo as a performance brand doesn’t compete with the name Cosworth etc

I suppose I’m considering the tuner, modified car scene, Nissans cars have become world wide icons because of these “scenes“.

I don’t think any brand to this day has the same abilities as Nissan to produce icons in the tuner scene, Toyota has failed to revive the supra, Subaru only has the Impreza and Mitsubishi only has the Evo, so don’t think they are at the same level as Nissan.

Ford is popular but they’ve not got the same worldwide reach.

Same for me. Everyone everywhere knows what one is, most people can recognise one if it drives past and the name alone conjures up all sorts of images.
Rolls Royce is probably the only other one that everyone knows, maybe Porsche. As an individual iconic car youll struggle to beat the E-Type IMO as well.

In Europe, they will only have the GTR

They haven’t revived the S Body. Next year you won’t be able to get a Z, hardly a worldwide reach anymore.

Don’t also forget over 40% of Nissan is owned by Renault

Suburu and Toyota have the 86

Toyota also had the MR2 and under their Lexus Brand, the LFA

You could argue Honda have as much sporting pedigree as Nissan. The NSX, S2000, Type R cars and their engines have won Formula 1 World Chapionships

The Mini? Kind of launched the British Tuner scene.

    If eventually bastardised by BMW

Renault Peugeot and Citroen have their own following too as do VW group.

Lotus are world renowned for their chassis technology

Mercedes AMG, BMW M Division, Audi Sport

It’s all subjective. For a Supercar, you automatically think of Italy. For high performance saloons, Germany. For fast hatchbacks, predominantly the French and Germans and Japan with Honda..

Good shout, the Beetle and 2CV have to get involved in that too. All instantly recognisable, all game changers in their own way, all made for ages - Mini 41 years, 2CV 42 years, Beetle 81 (!) years.

And Im sorry @JW but the F Type is not an iconic car, I dont think the XK8 is either TBH and Im 100% the 1999 S Type isnt

Or the front wheel drive X Type

But then as an iconic brand, you also have to include Land Rover

It might have been started by Mini and the like, but I think in terms of icons, it's got to be Ford from the 90s, Nissan from the 2000's onwards.

Why Nissan? They have only made a few “decent cars” but they do not have an iconic brand status like Ferrari or Porsche or even Land Rover. Instantly recognisable around the globe

If you go by brand value alone it is Toyota 1st, Mercedes Benz 2nd.

VW golf gti has been consistently good, and the beetle is definitely iconic, without it the 911 wouldn’t exist.

The classic Mini before bmw brought it back has got to be one of my favourite cars!

    How about Mazda MX5’s ?

Because iconic is a personal thing. If you take away the more modern s and r chassis models there are still loads of "iconic" cars from Nissan

Micra, Cube, Figaro, S-Cargo? Are they really iconic?

I don't mean to knock Nissan, but in 14 years of owning a 200 I bet the number of people who knew what I was talking about, without seeing it, could be counted on one hand.

Surely, not every car a manufacturer produces has to be a stunner !

I took the question to be about which manufacturer had consistently produced drool-worthy cars over the ages.

For me, that's Jaguar... and Lamborghini
