    Kaaz and Nismo diff choice?

    All

Going for a 1.5 way in the new car. Coming to order and I’m a bit stumped.

Kaaz have part numbers based on

    S14 93-96 Manual 1.5 Way
    S14 93-96 Manual 2 Way

    S14 93-96 Auto 1.5 Way
    S14 93-96 Auto 2 Way

    S14 96-99 Manual 1.5 Way
    S14 96-99 Manual 2 Way

    S14 96-99 Auto 1.5 Way
    S14 96-99 Auto 2 Way

    But Nismo simply have:

    S14 1 Way
    S14 2 Way

I know there’s supposed to be some spline differences or something in the diff. But anyone know why these differences don’t seem to matter to Nismo?

I'm not 100% as ive never bought one, but i got a feeling that brand new nismo diffs come with their own shafts.
As for the spline difference, early s14s had 29 spline output shafts and later ones had 30 spline output shafts. I think I've got a document that gives the exact years so I'll have a look

Thanks Mike, that would be an interesting read. And thanks for the information, the Nismo does appear to come with shafts so that will be the difference. In which case it makes the Nismo a much more complete offering but it’s subject to hefty import tax.

I had a Kaaz 2 way in my old car and I’d like to experience something new.

So if I buy a Nismo it won’t matter whether I buy an S14 or S14a diff casing to build it into because it has its own shafts. Makes sense.

The info isn't stuff that I've collected, I just copied it from a forum post a saw

Just a quick one, the casings then will be the same? If I buy a Nismo I can rebuild it into an S14a or S14 diff without issue?

I'm fairly certain the only difference in the housing is whether it has an abs sensor in the nose or not. The internals should be the same between s14 and s14a

Thanks Mike. I found the Nismo catalogue in English so I've deduced the one I need for definite, and it's compatible with the S14 as long as it's manual and DET not DE.

Now i can't decide if I should hold off ordering in case this trade deal bears some fruit.

This is from memory so dont go spending any money on what Ive said but ...........
the Nismo definitely comes with shafts, its also adjustable for locking ration and they all fit in the same cases. From a usage point of view Id take a Nismo over a Kaaz every day of the week, much smoother, quieter and more predictable.

Thanks bud, worth the extra this time around. My Kaaz 2 way was cool, but noisy. I contemplated the SuperQ option but the Nismo's are on discount on RHDJapan and Nengun.

not all Nismo diffs are adjustable. only the ones where you have to take the one half shaft out.
ive 2 Nismo diffs and one is quiet and the other mega clonky.

I didn't manage to find much feedback about the Super-Q at all. But at the moment if you're buying new, the GT Pro is actually cheaper even after duties.

That's right, GT LSD is non adjustable but GT Pro and GT Pro Carbon are.

Its an up-spec on Kaaz, a super quiet coating. About £100 over a regular Kaaz.

Yeah I guess it is almost the same price. £850 for Kaaz SuperQ from DW, ~£750 for nismo from RHDJapan + ~£100 for vat+import tax + ??? Shipping. You got the half-shafts or w/e they're called with it as well too.

One point I have seen brought up is that rebuilding/help with a nismo lsd is quite difficult to find but Kaaz is a lot easier on the support side. Having never owned an LSD i'm not sure how much weight this holds tho.

I reckon you'll land a Nismo for £1125 after all the duties, maybe a touch more with a handling fee. I haven't heard anything about the rebuild parts but to be honest, I doubt most people buying one will ever get to enough usage to rebuild either anyway. Though the parts are there on RHDJapan and Nengun.

But you can say that about anything, and keep going and going and going. I don’t want an OS Giken one anyway.
