Is Clutch Compensator required?
Hi guys
I am restoring my S13. Can I get rid of the clutch compensator? and just have the hard pipe from Master Cylinder plug straight into the flexi pipe?
What does the compensator actually do?

you can just bend the original pipe to fit into the flexi pipe bracket.

The clutch compensator is a one way valve in parallel with a restriction. The clutch will disengage just as fast you can plant your foot on it. When you lift your foot off the one way valve shuts and the restrictor damps the engagement so drive is taken up smoothly. This protects the plate and springs. If you sidestep the clutch, the plate suffers no damage.
Without it you have to learn to use the clutch nicely or suffer distorted springs and more rapid plate wear.
It's why clutch plates last for 120K miles when with 110bhp cars from the early 80's before these were fitted like last RWD Celica I was looking for a new clutch at 80K. I think 3/2.8L Capri was lucky to make 60K. 170bhp would likely be 50K miles or less with abuse, like side stepping.
