Loud screeching noise when engine on

So i've just put the SR back together this morning, and when turning on there is a very very loud screeching noise. Removed all belts, sill doing it. There is some smoke coming from the alternator region, but not much and could just be due to the fresh install. It doesn't smell like burnt stuff either, kind of neutral, i'm thinking it's probably just leftover oil from the install.

I had a strange situation at first where when i cranked the engine, nothing happened, just the starter was turning but not engaged to the flywheel, then i don't even remember what i did, probably start the car with a gear engaged and I could here the started lock to the wheel and pulling the car. So i then started fine in neutral and the noise started. (maybe now it's stuck extended?)

I've read the valve train can do that if no oil, but I have 6kg of pressure and i can see lubrication through the oil cap.

I've also read it could be the pilot bushing or thrust bearing, but before install it looked fine and i put a tone of lube on it. Though I did yank the engine pretty hard to fit it in place, as I was alone and it was a pain, I guess it's possible I damaged the pilot bushing.

or maybe it's just the starter. I will do further checks this afternoon but It'd be nice if anyone has any suggestions or ideas.

    Cheers

Possibly got a stuck starter solenoid? Could try giving it a few hard taps with something to see if it comes loose. If it is that then it's probably worth getting the starter replaced or reconditioned by a specialist

Fixed, it was indeed the starter, what a relief. It was misaligned apparently, a friend told me the oem bolts have an aligning property, and since i use some bought everyday life bolts, that could be the reason, i never had the oem ones. So, if this ever happens to anyone just loosen the starter a bit and it will realign by itself, then tighten with the engine on and finito.
