Running badly since air filter change

Title says it all really! S13 200SX CA18DET, completely stock

I changed the air filter as part of a basic service, and it's just ran horrendously ever since

    Idle seems fine

So at lower speeds and in lower gears, above about 3000 rpm the car starts stuttering and feels like it's about to stall, has pretty much no power

In 3rd gear and above, it stops doing that although the power seems to dip in and out as I'm accelerating

By 4th and 5th gear going above 40-50mph I don't have any issues, boost seems okay even when dropping down gears etc

I'm presuming I dislodged something somehow when opening the airbox but I don't know what! I've checked around that area but can't see any connectors or lines loose

Any help would be super ultra appreciated

I had an similarish problem that was a broken coil pack.

Unplug the plug and give it a good spray with carb cleaner

I was going to come back on here and joyfully tell everyone I sorted it! I ended up disconnecting/reconnecting everything around the airbox again, all hoses leads and plugs, and it seemed to be sorted!

However a couple of days later, it has returned it isn't quite as bad now though, the car doesn't splutter as much and doesn't lose quite as much power. It really seems to be worst at 2-3k rpm in 2nd gear, as I'm accelerating, and the same revs in third too. 1st 4th and 5th seem okay, so weirddd

Did you swap the spark plugs when you did the service?

I did, went with the stock ones (BCPR6ES-11). All brand new and torqued to spec too. Do you think they could be causing an issue like this? If so apologies for not mentioning it!

Nah it's not that strong, more just feels like power cutting in and out rather than something actively slowing me

Sounds a bit like an ignition issue to me. If you have the old plugs I’d try them.

Hold on. Just seen what plugs you are using. Get BCPR7’s

Might be worth a shot to clean the MAF with contact cleaner. Only use contact cleaner though as it doesn't leave a residue behind after evaporating

All the above are good things to check. Also, try closing up the gap on the new plugs to 0.8 The factory setting of 1.1 is really too large and, on an older car, can lead to the spark being blown out on full boost. That would be my bet, especially if the gap on the old plugs was less than 1.1.

One other thing to check is that you didn't damage (or forget to reconnect) the earth cable on the coil pack loom at the bulkhead end of the engine. It is essential that that is in good condition and connected to the correct coilpack bolt.
