    Clearance behind rear seat panels

I'm running internal braided brake lines and I want to drill holes into the panels that were originally behind the rear seats, to allow me to rivet p'clips to secure the lines. But I'm nervous about drilling into the fuel tank! How much clearance is there behind there?

It sits about 20mm off the chassis. I’d be very very careful. It really isn’t a big job to drop the subframe and tank if you really need to do it.

Thanks Sean. I can put something on the drill bit to ensure it only just goes through. As long as there's a bit of clearance. Still nervous though!

Trying to avoid dropping the sub frame if I can, working underneath in a single garage is a pain in the arse!

Remove the panel in the boot and you can assess the space. Might even be able to fit something down there to protect the tank.

Do you mean the bit where you access the fuel pump etc.?

Yeah, unless I’m not thinking of the right area of the car of course.

Thanks Chris, I'll take a look. Certainly makes sense that I might be able to see into the gap behind the seat back panel from there.

If you don’t want to do that, you can get adhesive bonded studs which are absolutely suitable for that kind of application.

To follow this up: couldn't really get to or see anything from behind the fuel pump panel, it's too tight and all the hoses are in the way.

But I went for it anyway. For future reference, in the areas I drilled there is 5 - 10mm clearance between the panel and the fuel tank behind. I obviously picked points on the panel that were raised to maximise the gap:

    Tidy job

Edit. I was thinking of the wrong area of the car btw. Sorry.

tbh you could have gone down where the chassis rails are.

I could, but I've got a bias valve in the cabin.

Edit: actually you probably meant route the lines over those bits of the panels. Fair point, I just thought it looked neater this way, and moved the lines from where I tend to park my arse if I'm working inside the back of the car!
