There was a case of an S13 being built without the washers on the head bolts. Is it possible that the same is true for an SR20 ? I've never had one apart so don't even know if they have a washer.

I have no washers on my headbolts, but would have thought they would come with the headbolts when you buy them if this was the case. But it would be interesting to know
that would remove any case hardening surface treatment from the stem tip and potential it will wear faster and clearance increases/valve train gets noisy
that's why they have shims to set them to correct height with no stem machining, not saying it's wrong but it's not the way I set them up
Standard SR20 headbolts do have washers! I must say, I'm not sure I'd trust the rest of the engine this guy has put together, and I'd be getting a proper builder to check clearances etc. and reassemble!

If you miss out the washers, the bolts bottom out in the threads before the head is tightly clamped down meaning they get torqued but you don't get a good seal and you do get low compression across all cylinders.
