VAG coil conversion guide

I decided to convert my CA18det s13 to VAG coils and as I like to do things myself i set about finding out what I needed, there is alot of conflicting info. So after getting mine up and running smoothly I will pass the info on.

I am running a standard ECU with stage 3 chip HDEV.

Its cheap and fairly straight forward if you are handy with a soldering iron.

Parts Required.

Yakazi male plugs

1 off 7122-1844-40 4 pin
2 off 7122-1864-40 6 pin

sourced these from Auto-Click UK cost £15

VAG plugs female

4 off pre wired

sourced from E-Bay cost £17

Coils

There are two main types off VAG coils, short type and R8 type. I went for short type as I wanted to retain the standard look. The cover does not fully go down it needs to be spaced up by 6mm ( helps cooling ). You will also need to decide on coil type BEFORE making the loom as they are wired differently.

i used 2.5 mm high temperature wire. soldered joints and heatshrink

I saw some NGK red coils on someones SR and they sat lower than mine/everyone elses. number 1 coilpack was flush with the top of the rocker cover. the reconed they were straight out the box like that.

However ive read the 350z coils also fit and have started to be used so for anyone considering the swap its an option. The standard Nissan plugs fit the 350 coils but they need a couple of the wires swapped / repined and the ignitor needs bypassed as well so not a straight swap.

The coils i use, use the same pinouts. So the black ones (1.8T) and red ones (R8) are interchangeable. I've used them and many clients have used them also without any issues.

This conversion though.... It's only got advantages! A few minor disadvantages as far as i know.

Advantages:
VAG coils are rated at 200hp per cylinder
Much stronger spark vs outdated nissan/splitfire technology, so better output and smoother idles, maybe due to cleaner combustion?
Loads of boost without blow out, you can increase gap and still have no blow out (increased gap is supposed to add some low end torque i heard?)
Cheap as chips at £20-25 a piece, europe is flooded with these parts too if you're into 2nd hand coils

Disadvantages:
Higher current draw
Non-removable tall stalk (looks like crap in shallow spark plug holes)

I'm now looking into genuine 370z coils, higher power output and lower current draw. But that's a project for in the future. They're not very common (yet) in the EU. But in the USA, they're about 60USD for a used set of 6, same loom with a bit of repinning, makes things a bit more interesting

Btw, i still have some 6 pins Yakazi plugs left in case anyone wants to experiment in making their own loom

I went for the black 1.8 vag coils and it made a big difference to idle smoothness because I can run a 1.1mm gap and still make 350hp without misfires

Oh and I got a set of brand new Bosch coils for 60 quid and that’s about the price of second hand 20 year old coils for an SR
