    Mystery issue, any ideas please?

Hi all, spent time on Sunday in my friends garage as we are trying to get the S14a running.

Some months ago it cut out on a motorway and had to be recovered. Car has covered 60 miles that day and was running well, at about 65mph lost all power, wouldn't rev and cut out if clutch pressed.

Yesterday we did the following tests :

    All fluid levels fine.
Compression test good on all 4.
    Fuel checked ok.
Sparks ok. Plugs are black but were anyway as car used to run a little rich.
Run with lambda disconnect, still won't idle properly or rev.
ALso disconnected AFM, same as above.

Car runs, very very rich, won't idle or rev, loads of black smoke for unburnt fuel out of the exhaust.

    Racelogic TC is turned off.

Tried a fault code reader, ECU not showing any.

Apexi AVCR and SAFC2 (left to monitor knock only) showing no knock or unexpected results, injector % as expected on idle, 1 to 2 %

ECU is original with HDev board added and custom map.

What would you try next, this is stumping us?

    Cheers.

P.S. I have a video of it running I can upload if that is possible.

HDev board seated properly? Mine did something very similar when it had an empty map...

Suggestions I have had so far include :

    1. Check there isn't a massive boost leak (we can hear no air sounds) but pressure test
    2. Pin out the Z32 AFM
    3. Loosen the two bolts on the CAS and alter whilst running to see if it makes difference

Will also look at the ECU and see if board looks ok, thanks for that.

Maybe another check would be to remove ECU and H Dev board and send to Jez for testing?

    Remove TC completely.

I've seen a faulty box cause similar issues even when turned off.

Thanks Ben, could I just bypass it by rejoining the 4 injector signal cables that I cut into to install it?

Yes - if it was installed as per the instructions you should just be able to unplug the white harness connector and join the original harness back together.

I bought it off someone who installed it then sold the car a few months later and removed it, and it did not come with any connectors unfortunately, just the cable ends, so installing was I think soldering the two ends together and either heat shrink or insulation tape, or both. Connectors would have made it a lot easier, but it was about 12 to 14 years since installed.

Looks like I am going to have to get the soldering iron into the footwell tomorrow then, thanks for the suggestion

Check ETS and wiring before getting involved in anything more complicated.

I would have thought the leak would be massive if car was not going above idle? And won't even idle properly. Nothing "looks" out of place" but will add a test to the list.

The SAFC2 has not been touched for over 10 years, it runs H Dev Custom Map into the original ECU, I just left the SAFC2 on as it monitors knock and looks good

What do you mean by ETS?

Also, the FAQ for RLTC link does not work, am trying to search for the 4 injector wire colours so I can solder them together tonight.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm trying to get the car ready to do some commutes in, near 400bhp on semi slicks and 10/8 coilovers with disconnected traction control is just what is needed down the B roads in winter.

Wiring is obviously a big one to check but a whopping leak of puff could be the cause of it.

My money is on the AFM

You only need two tools in life - wd-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the wd-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

And if you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem!

    Tonight's progress :

Bypassed Racelogic, disconnected connector plugs from unit and to save undoing the solder put four bridge cables in to link the original injector cables as plug end not connected. No difference.

Smoke test high lighted a small boost leak on the FMIC hot side pipe as it goes into the samco to join the intercooler, looks like someone has drilled a screw when fixing the splitter in place into this pipe. Fixed this but no difference.

Should also point out car was so badly flooded took ages to start it, plugs out 3 times, vacuum pump into cylinders, heater on plugs, battery jump pack etc.

Once we had cleared the flooding and started it with boost leak and racelogic bypassed still runs massively rich and won't rev.

There in no boost at all. Vacuum at soleoid though.

No movement in diaphragm actuator (has a 2871 turbo with HKS actuator and apexi avcr solenoid)

Disconnected circlip from wastegate. Wastegate moves fine.

No movement of actuator when using vacuum gauge.

Also tried running with Ste operating the wastegate with his hand and still no boost generated, confirmed by gauge and also AVCR reading.

AVCR solenoid has vacuum on both sides.

Also tried running again with no AFM connected as pipe from off AFM during smoke test.

When running it fills the place in not many seconds with unburnt fuel smoke running hugely rich with no boost.

Any more thoughts based on the above?

    Cheers.

    Pressure test the intake side.
See the way i see it, the afm is reading a high intake of air - the ecu is doing its sums and asking the squirters to do the biz which they are.
However there seems to be far too much fuel for air, so ... wtf is the air the afm has read going to.. now if it aint a boost leak between T puffer and the cylinders then .. er... well it aint vanished into thin.. er air...

So no boost generated but large amount of blow going past the afm... so .. its got to be going some where, prob out a hole in the IC or something.

Very odd, have you considered taking the SAFC out next?
