What is the best all round daily?

A question that has been pondering me for a while, but as most of us have a fun or track car, then what do you need from a daily.

Good to drive, all the comforts and toys, economical, reliable, lowish tax, estate preferable, towing useful, got to be decently quick.

Is there anything better than a 335d M Sport Touring Xdrive?

I've never seen a car tick so many boxes!

Depends how big a boot you need but that would be a decent daily for sure.

On a tighter budget I’m tempted to go for a mk4 facelift mondeo titanium x sport estate, driven a mates which is remapped to 240bhp, handles well and has loads of room.

The Mercedes E350 CDI Estate would do for me. I wouldn't fancy BMW M Sport suspension on a daily commuter.

    3.0 tdi Audi A4/A6 allroad.

You only need two tools in life - wd-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the wd-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

And if you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem!

Have the hatch X sport 2.0 163bhp. It actually rather good. Massive inside, looks alright lots of toys and steers nice.

Mazda 6 sport nav seem a lot of car for the money too 2013 onwards shape

I think the XFR estate is like the 535d of old, they are so good no-one ever sells them

Ive just bought the missus a Mk7.5 Golf GTI, maybe not as good as the big diesels on a long cruise but faster and more fun on the twisty bits - still 40mpg as well

XFR Sportbrakes are available, amongst the hens teeth.
Not sure I'd class something that'll do 15mpg around town a perfect daily, though.
    Damn cool car though.

The XFS Sportbrake, (diesel version) is an option, still ~300bhp, nice place to be. That would be close to a perfect daily, but being diesel and having a DPF makes it a bit useless if you do a lot of short journeys.

Funnily enough i've considered most of the cars on this thread.

Anything JLR is out for poor build quality unfortunately. I run a Mazda 6 Sport SL Estate as a daily now, is brilliant as my commute is 12 miles each way of some good B roads. Mondeo's similarly good to Mazda but both only offer 4 pots.

Had a Merc they are good, thought the Golf R estate was ideal except one it can't tow and two I live between Liverpool and Manchester which brings theft issues, my bosses wife works on the local car crime response team and anything Audi/VW/Ford that is fast and 4wd i can't leave on the drive, they seem to leave BMW's alone as they don't like RWD.

Interesting she told me of the ones they arrest they tell her they leave cars alone if they see a Clifford system or stickers in the window as they are too time consuming to take.

There are some great choices about at the moment.

The Golf GTi would be ideal if an estate, you can get the Seat Cupra Estate which is a good shout as well.

Our 8th gen civic is doing a great daily job.

Cavernous inside for a hatchback (only 50ltrs less space than a Volvo xc70)

    Cheap to buy and insure

Imperfect body, do you don't worry about feral kids knocking doors in it at the soft play.

    Ultra reliable Honda petrol engine

    Really good on fuel.

Comfy enough, certainly as good sit in as a bmw "m sport" a little bouncy over bumps.

    Child friendly iso fix etc.

In 3 yrs and 35k it's only had a £8 temp sensor replaced.

Anyway, Focus ST Estate is the best all round daily I have had and I will have another at some point. Ticks all the boxes except you cant tow with it due to the exhaust position. And if the petrol one doesnt have good enough mpg for you (28 on average, mid 40s on a run) you can get the 180ps diesel. Facelift has a better interior as it doesnt have the buttonfest on the dash.

Was it running run flat tyres? They seem a lot better on normal tyres.

Nope it was on 18 inch normal's.
Really poor ride, it wasnt a sports car either due to the weight.
