im going to swap over to the VW/audi tfsi 'red' coilpacks and wondered if any brands were better than others?
options seem to be,
unbranded ebay specials
NGK
or eurocarparts HAAS
or are they basically all the same.

I’d go for ngk or see of Bosch do something
If you buy cheap ones you will be replacing them every year
I haven't got R8 coils but the VAG coils I'm using are bosch

Do not get haas from euros. They are shockingly bad. No pun intended haha

I could only find the HASS ones on their site, it didn't give my any options of different brands like it normally does.
the thing that bugs me about their site is that you cant search by manufacturers part numbers, which is a pain if you own a car made up of random bits like most of us on here do.

NGK U5014
and nothing else.
If your not running mega power you thought about the normal black 1.8t coils I’m at about 350hp and have no misfires under boost and run a 1mm gap so get a nice idle also if it’s a SR20 you can keep the plug cover on with some small spacers under it
it is for an Sr20
the plug cover went in the bin years ago, Ive always believed they help to cook the coilpacks.
I did buy brand new OEM coilpacks but have been getting misfires now ive turned the boost up so figured I would just get 'the best' ones and be done with it.
the NGK u5014 were the ones I was looking at.
U5014
Opie was the cheapest I could find when I got mine. https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-80815-n...-top-coil.aspx
They give you 10% off too with the code: SXOC
Does anyone have the harness details/pinout for these coils? i.e. what's involved in making them work with the existing 3 wire loom with igniter?
Is there much proof that they are any good? The R8 is a N/A motor, so low cylinder pressures etc compared to a turbo lump, esp a tuned one running high boost?
Do the high power (1500-2000bhp) turbo'd R8s run the stock coil?
Are they better than Splitfires?
I'm running Splitfires but I find that they are struggling at ~1.75bar/500bhp, I've had to up the dwell a bit (beyond ideal) in high boost regions and narrow the plug gap to stop it missing. They could just be getting old, but ideally I'd like to run std gaps with no farts.
Are the VAG/R8 coils going to do the job and therefore worth the effort messing with the loom etc, or do I really need to look at CDI or other solution?
They're used as an upgrade on the VAG 2.0L turbo engines so they can't be that bad.
there is a list of spark voltages somewhere and it shows the r8 coils have way more voltage at the plug than the SR coils and there are plenty of high power turbo cars running them
You can’t make them work directly with the 3 wire harness as they need an additional ground wire that links all the coils but it’s pretty simple to do
You can’t use the factory ignitor chip as the transistors are built into the coils so either cut it out and joint the looms or gut the ignitor chip so it’s pass through
an sr20 ignitor bypass loom is £16 off ebay.
I will let you know how ive wired mine when I put them in and get them to work.
I got the coils from opie oils. as I don't trust ebay sellers to not sell me fake ones.
Do you have the wiring diagram for the 4 pin coils?
this is what ive done. but i only ran my car for about 2 minutes due to noise.
the coil plugs are wired as follows
1=12v supply
2=signal ground
3=signal
4= supply ground
pin 1 is the flat side of the plug, the VEMS plugs are numbered. most cheap ebay plugs seem to come pre-wired which i didn't want to add extra joints into the loom.
i just used 44/0.30 wire for all of it.
the coils sit pretty high out of an Sr rocker cover. hopefully my wobbly FRP bonnet wont rub on coil #1 when im zooming about.
Cheers.
I need to check the height. I'll be putting them into a 4G63, but that already sits high.
I have a spare coil though, I just had to replace one in the missus car (not an R8 LOL) so I have a dud one to use as a template.
Well the coils are too tall for the 4G, They'd work but I'd need to lose the coil cover which I don't want to do as it'll spoil the look.
