I think the diesel mini cooper was a decent shout. sack off the run flat tyres if it still has them. most girls like them as they look gay as foookk but they handle decent and seat 4 adults in mild discomfort if needed. boot is fairly small but the opening is decent enough so you can fold the seats down for putting MTB's etc.. in.

these days I think I have more fun trying to drive rubbish cars fast than trying to drive fast cars fast down the lanes.

Seat Leon FR is a good shout and in budget, likely to have miles though.

    BUMP!

Lexus MOT expires in April and now the wife is getting stuck into the journey she's done what all good women do and.... Moved the goalposts from here.

    All the way to here.

She wants to remain in an automatic. That just about kills the fun part lol. She also wants leather luxury spec so we're talking higher end and therefore bigger cars. There goes the MPG also, then.

So basically we're just out for a replacement for the Lexus

I'd rather stay petrol unless the diesel equivalent is properly reliable.

    325i BMW tourer?
    Volvo XC90?
    Saab 95?

    Any more?

MUST HAVE PARKING SENSORS. Don't ask why.

Xc90 will be lovely, but sub 30 mpg...

Just had my touareg remapped and that's doing a sensational 27mpg now, though it is a nice place to sit.

The xc70 is pretty much the same inside just a little more compact than the 90 but a good 10mpg better on juice

    Jag X-Type Estate.

Diesels are a bit wimpy though.

Also, you know she wants a Jag.

X-Type is out on the grounds that it's too 'roundy'

Currently looking at BMW E46's and Honda Accord Tourers (guuuhhh how **** ugly can they be) with the odd, umm, oddball thrown in for good measure.

Decided to keep it cheap, ie mechanically sound but tatty, and to hell with the fuel economy the list of wants far exceeds the budget for such things.

    Least enjoyable car search EVAR.

    Left field option, Subaru Legacy?

Don't bother with the diesel though.

2.5i auto with leather for example:

    Ta.

I think the Mondiddly is going to be too "roundy" if the X-Type is.

Yeah well it's not like I've got history of buying something that fits the actual requirements is it?

Comfy, quiet, auto, leather, cheap. Near enough.

Took it for a decent drive last night. Averaging 18mpg according to the trip computer although that was with my deliberate skid provocation (the traction control is too aggressive and I need to learn how to turn it off).

For a big barge it's surprisingly nimble. It's also pretty bloody comfy, it rides a lot better than other exec cars I've had from those years. Fast it ain't. Slow it ain't. It's just wafty and a nice place to be.

Hoping it's not a nail as I bought it in a bit of a hurry but if it is, then it ain't a lot of money to lose. Decent SH and MOT history and just over 91k miles so it should be good for a while yet. They reckon gearbox is a weak point but in reality they said that about the ZF box on the BM too but I did 80k in that and took it over 200k with no bother, so you never know eh.

Hilarious fun parking it outside the house can't wait for wifey to have a go.

Got a couple of bits I need to look at. Squeak from rear corner I thought was just brakes binding a bit as it had been sitting but would seem it's probably a wheel bearing on its way out. Doesn't look too bad a job.

    It'll do for now.
