How hard is it to get an unmodified manual s14a?

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the correct section but I didnt think it fit in the marketplace so this seems the next closest fit? If a mod could move the thread to a more suitable section (if required) I'd appreciate it

I'm going to be looking to buy an s14a in the near future. I've wanted one for a long time and am now close to having funds (and a license ) to pick up one. My only worry is that the only ones I seem to be able to find are either auto>manual converts or heavily modified. That makes for hefty insurance costs, especially since I'm a new driver. The costs of insuring a manual (a must for me) non-touring model are relatively low and its a real beauty, win-win. The only trouble seems to be finding one. I'm more than happy (eager, even) to do work on the car to get it up to snuff and really make it my own, so even if I cant find something practical to insure in the short term I will still likely pick something up I can work on (and look at ) in the mean time.

Does anyone know the best places to look for something like this, and have any idea how much I'd be looking to pay? Prices I've seen for modified models are anywhere from 3k-8k, the lower end of which seems reasonable for an unmodified one.

Thanks, I'll stick around and hopefully be able to contribute in due course!

EDIT: I should add, I'm not desperately interested in a pristine example, I'm not new to body and semi-structural repairs.

There are some left. Keep checking the for sale section on here. I have seen them on ebay on the rare occasion too.

You're going to need between 6 and 10K too for a nice standard one imo.

    Guess I'll get saving

Going back to my reasoning, the insurance being high, do you have any idea how typical modifications affect the price of insurance, like what mods to avoid when looking for something cheaper? Like if a modified MOTed project is going to cost me 4k less but only cost 1k more pa on insurance then it's likely going to be worth it for me. I've had a look around online but there's not many resources I can find concerning insurance prices of modified cars in the uk, so any info would be appreciated.

I seem to recall through some insurance companies* the more modified it the cheaper it gets, I'm with Greenlight and currently pay around £400 with everything declared and an agreed valuation too.

*specialist, such as Greenlight, Flux and sky

Thanks for that input, I’ll bear that in mind. So far I’ve been looking through price comparison sites- do you have any idea if they’re good for an estimation on a modified car?

Also, if you don’t mind me asking how long have you been driving and what is your agreed valuation?

    Thanks

price comparison sites are the worst, you won't get any reasonable quotes from them.

ive been driving years, my 15 is valued at £10k

400 sounds very reasonable, I can't wait till I'm older so I can get rates like that

The more I look into it the more it seems like I'll need to get something and keep it off the road for a couple of years... Being quoted stupid numbers (more than 10x what you're paying) for a lightly modified s14a, compared to the ~1400 for a stock one. Even a simple Auto>Manual conversion adds 2k or so... I don't imagine waiting would be a good idea though, as I assume prices are rising due to cars getting rarer? Is there any info about on price trends of various SX models?

    Also nice name

I mean even for a shitter I'm looking at close to 1000. A 400 quid peugot 107 is gonna run me 890, and is only gonna drive me up the wall. Been quoted 1150 on a BMW 318... somehow... Might go with that since I can pick one up for around 1500. Even so, in a few years when I do get an SX will I be paying more than I could have saved due to increasing rarity/price, or are prices relatively stable?

Personally I would value a stock car twice that of a modified car. Mods are a personal thing that to me devalue the car as everyones taste is different.

The shitter the car the more it'll cost to insure imo, insurance companies know you don't give f*ck about the car so they charge accordingly

Buy an sx and spend 2 years fixing the rust, save up for parts and insurance, the car will appreciate all the while so you'll be golden

Might be worth adding a mum or dad as a named driver to your policy, their good history can reduce your premium ive been told

Have a chat with Brentacre Insurance. They're very reasonable and unless any mods drastically increase the performance then they don't really affect the policy price

Agree as nice as getting an unmolested stocker is ,they need some suspension mods and more rubber/bigger/wider wheels imo
getting one with them bits already would make sense in saving you buying them on top of the cars price
had four stock 14a's and they drive nice as a cruiser/daily driver if that's all you want the car for?

I wouldn't be afraid of a lightly modified car. I'd trust a long time owner with sensible mods over a bog standard "RUST FREE" unwelded example

A lightishly modded s14, say 300 hp and decent suspension ect is reasonable, its got a lot of go even for modern cars.
But heck they are showing there age now, then again so i everything.

An absolute beauty, if only I had the money just now

Good to know that they do come up now and then, though. Will keep an eye on the market and see how it goes.
