If it’s brown it’s most likely an earth wire

Failing that its the hand brake warning light that goes to the switch at the base of the handbrake. Lights up the dash warning light if you have the handbrake on whilst the ignition is on.
Just been through the wiring diagrams in the repair manual and it has the warning light wire as Y/PU (Yellow/Purple) so its a good chance its a ground/earth wire like jflather said

browns are ignition lives, blacks are earths on nissan circuits.
if you put an earthed piece of wire up that yellow/purple wire the dash light should come on with ignition. if it doesnt then chances are the bulb has blown. if none of the other dash lights work then its the cluster fuse.

car isnt driving atm so will be a while before i find out anyways ha. defo to do with the handbrake light, as it has a fly off handbrake so was probably snipped to avoid the light flashing when doing serious JDM touge dori dori in japan lol. but have to get that sorted for next year's MOT ha. might have another peek at the weekend hehe

just checked on my '92 uk 200sx and the OE handbrake switch wire is solid black,
I have deleted center console so checked the mirrors loom and ciggy lighter and none are brown coloured
we may need some pics to ID if its a OE nissan wire or something added

No wires in door mirror switch are brown.
No wires to gig lighter are brown.
Not the O/D switch.
Handbrake yellow/purple.
Ashtray red/light blue and black earth.
Auto lighting is same as ashtray.
Is it on loom that comes across the drivers side or does it come from centre of dash?
