I'm swapping my hsd's out for some apex units.
The hsd's were good enough although they were too stiff for me making the car less fun to drive on the road. The current price of the apex units makes it a no brainier imo currently.

im just worried on the knocking issue, read a lot of it, my brother has some on his that knock and cannot find anything wrong
If you don't trust them then go for hsd's
I fitted my hsd's about 20k/6 years ago and they've needed new lower bushes on both rear dampers, snapped a spring on the front and need a top bearing for the fronts.
I wouldn't say either are perfect

I have had both. Apex are OK. But I rate the hsd better.
forget about money if there was the same price
The knocking issue 9/10 times is preload set incorrectly. Nothing to do with the coilovers as such.

Same money I’d go for hsd’s but softer than a 10/8 for the road.

It's my apex coilovers he's talking about. I've set the pre load correctly as I've read about it before, I took them off to check them
Over
And found nothing. The coilovers have only done approx 5-6k miles and still look like new.
Have you been in touch with Apex. They can test the units

I would say it depends on what you want to use the car for.
an all out track / drift car I would put hsd's on it.
for a fast road / daily car I would put apex comfys on it. this way you wont cringe when you see a pebble in the road. although I would probably paint the lower cups and springs as they tend to rust.
my current hsd's are probably 3/4 years old and covered no more than 2k track miles and the rear bushes are going. the dust covers are also starting to go.
I had apex coilovers on for about 8 years before that and only had problems with the rusting.
I had hsd's on my s15 and swapped the springs for softer 8/6 (I think) and it was a bit nicer to drive but still not better than the apex comfies.
No not spoke to them, was thinking of buying some more and selling mine Most people probably wouldn't care especially if it's a track/drift car but mines not. It's just a bit annoying the rattle Only on local roads/streets with pot holes, get on bypasses/motorways they fine. A shame as they still look pretty much as new.
What spring rates are comfys like mine? If I was to get hsd equivalent for ride quality
Apex comfy are 5/4 spring rate.

I've had my apex comfy coilovers for 7-8 years. Used for street, track and drift and they've been fantastic, and still look like new (bar a little flaking on the springs...). The only experience I have with HSD is a friend having them, and they rusted in no time and seized the collars. This was a few years ago so maybe the new ones are different?
I've got a set of comfy coilovers waiting to fit to my PS13.
The only thing that annoys me about the car is that for most of the driving I do it's on Yorkshire rural roads so I'm keen to see what these are like as I want to be able to have fun on the B roads and sacrifice a bit of roll on track.
Just can't decide whether to fit them now for a month or do so after winter.. hmmm

My HSD HRs have not seized or rusted. I have had them for 7 years....
Any coilover will seize or rust if you don't take proper care of them.
Im running Apex on my S13 at the moment and to be fair i can't fault them really and mine are a old set but because they have been looked after there all nice and free and working as they should no knocks or bangs.
Im going to be swapping them out for some CS2's but thats mainly because im doing a full suspension refurb , Im a tart that likes to run stupid wheels so require something stiffer and plan on doing more track time next year. Ive ran a few other cars and HSD has always been my go to brand parts are easy to get hold of for them from DW and they work well. Id just be worried if Apex shutting down might be hard to get spares in future maybe ?
A rattle on the rear passenger side is very common on the apex coilies. They all do that, sir.
It is a bit annoying but no reports of failure or it getting worse. Apex looked into it but did not come to a definite conclusion. I had 3 sets and they all did it.
Fiddling with preload didn't fix mine.
They don't rust either unless you leave them in a bath of winter salt. Clean them regularly and they'll be fine
