    Sr20det tapping

    Hi,

So today I have been to the mappers & had a base map put on the car, everything went smoothly and he was running it for around 2.5hours, no faults no nothing...

The guy let the car cool down a little bit and had a brew, came back and started the engine to find it tapping from top end, sounds like a lifter draining its oil or something he said.. soon as you rev it the noise is a lot quieter but still faintly there.

Anyway, Iv got it back home, drained the oil, no metal dust or anything in the oil which is great, oil is quite thin due to it being running in oil anyway.

Has anyone else had a similar issue with a lifter or anything? It didn't do it at first it's only after a few runs on the dyno so a little unsure where to go... either stick a thicker engine oil in it or take the rocker off and check out what's going on?

I would for piece of mind pull the cam cover and have a look.

Is it just cheap oil you used for running in or proper running in oil?

needs a thicker oil,If its a old SR with some miles on it oil pressure will drop to 10 psi or less on hot idle with a thin oil

So I stripped it down and took the rocker off, the oil is very thin & I don't particularly fancy doing 100 odd miles with that oil so that's all been drained... looking around there's no obvious signs of anything failing, I pushed down all the rocker arm tails with my thumb and there was only one that had a very slight bit of movement, wasn't easy to push but was enough.

So, do I strip them all down & re-bleed them again or put a thicker oil in and hope they fill up with that?

10w40 fully synth usually, some people go 10w50 if the engine has some miles on it.

What have you put in it?

Should I remove the lifters and bleed them again or just stick the thicker oil in and see if that sorts it out??

My lifters were noisy as hell after they were out last time. Rebled them and they were fine after. Worth doing for the time it takes

shouldn't need to bleed the lifters as its the thin oil not air causing the noise, just adding a thicker oil and running the engine it will soon go silent

oh right okay is that for deffo? iv just ordered 10w40 mineral running in oil which is thicker than what I did have so should be abit better, I didn't really want to take the lifters out so if that's the case that helps me out massively

It's not a 100% I'm certain as it's old cars we are playing with, but I will go with changing the oil 1st is easier than pulling the lifters out
after the oil change and it has run for a while the new thicker oil will need sometime to fill the lifters as they don't drain when the oil is changed
if the engine was sounding good till the dyno pulls it should sound the same with the thicker oil,
I suspect the oil thin oil was possibly diluted with excess fuel when it was being mapped making it worse/thinner = lifter noise
