I went to Val Thorens for a week year before last, never been before and we tried teaching ourselves on the dry slope beforehand, the button lifts on that were horrific. I didn't make it up once the first session we did
I spent a week falling down a mountain though admittedly I got smashed every night and was waking up drunk.
A few months later though I tried Hemel and realised it was so much easier to snowboard when your not hanging.
A few lessons down Hemel will easily sort you out for a trip, the mate I went to the dry slopes with did a black run first day!

I've never snowboarded in a foreign country so I don't know how much it costs.
