    What causes Battery overcharging?

    Any ideas?

The battery was fizzing and bubbling, also there appears to be some leakage and the sides of the battery have expanded

I've removed it now but need to get bottom of issue.

On bikes its usually the rectifier/regulator. I don't know if the same applies to cars.

If its getting too much charge, its probably the alternator.

Have you checked the voltage across the battery when turned off and when idling ?

Slap a multimeter on her and let us know....

Voltage regulator. On my 911 it could be changed out separately, if the alternator was still good. I changed the lot as I didn't trust a 16 year old part - as it happened both were fine and it was something else

I think the S13 one is a 'sealed unit' in that the voltage reg sits within the body of the alternator - I've never changed one out on one, so I don't know for sure.

I think I've got a spare alternator in my shed for an S13 if they are the same.

It was promised to Mr Pea but he hasn't collected or turned up to any event that I've been to in the last 12 months.

Ive got a spare 14a alternator in bits here that i took apart without realising how awkward it was to reassemble - in the end I gave up.

Anyway, it was off an 87k 14a and was working fine when removed, so your welcome to have the pile of bits (it's all there) and either rob the regulator from it or try and reassemble it.

It could also be due to the battery being knackered

This happened to a friends Pug 106, the alternator was massively over charging the battery due to the voltage regulator failing and it fried the wiring as well as the battery.

What a lot of people do with their track cars is fit a large fuse just off the positive side of the battery, so if the alternator regulator ever shits its pants and trys to fry the battery then the fuse goes, Saving your expensive lightweight battery.

these alternators are pretty easy to take apart and put back together again.
there are a few guides on youtube.
