SR20DET ENGINE rebuild costs using Forged Parts

I'm looking at doing a Forged rebuild as I seem to have a low Oil pressure issue but needs investigating once stripped down.

What parts to replace as a minimum ?? I know rods , Pistons , ARP bolts , Gaskets , New oil pump , valve springs , rocker arms

What Spec have other people done and what parts and what did you achieve on the dyno ?

Thinking of upgrading Cams and trying to build something around the 500Bhp mark !

Subscribed. Have essentially the same question. Has anyone heard anything about Jim Wolf cams? On zilvia they seem very highly rated. I'm also looking at a dual guide conversion Finch, apparantly it helps with stopping you throw rocker arms.

I think my last parts bill for a rebuild was around £8500

I know depending on spec etc it will vary .

I'm hoping to do the build with one of my close friends so need a list of components to buy then will have to get certain bits done elsewhere.

It was running 396 bhp on standard cams on a GTX2867 Turbo

off the top of my head I would be looking at,

    pistons £550
    rods £450
    arp head bolts £180
    head gasket £120
    arp rod bolts £120
    Nissan oil pump £200
    water pump £60
    gasket set £160
    timing chain kit £150
    rocker arms if changing cams
    rocker shims
    mains/rods/thrust bearings £120
    machine work/ bore-hone-skim-grind-clean will be £300 to £500+

then you have labour of the guy doing the work.

Mine is also coming up to 5k for parts and machining only, but i've got a bit of an exagerrated list. And that's just the tall block
Assembly is another 1k is you don't do it yourself.

    My list:
    Darton sleeved block
    Bore+hone+stepped deck
    Oil groove machined into mains
    Stock crank balanced and polished
    CP pistons
    BC+625 rods
    Mazworx main and head studs
    Tomei hg
    GTiR Main
    Regular DET rod/thrust bearings
    Dual S+R
    Used VE oil pump
    New water pump
    Gasket set

Thanks Guys for the info and rough costs.

I just need to roughly workout the costs and what to do !

Ive never built an engine so its either pay a company unless my mate fancies building it with me !

Next issue will be gearbox , mine is fine currently but I know over 400bhp I need 350Z or skyline box , has anyone done anything else ??

    Z32 box is another option.

I believe cp rods come with arp bolts so you could save some cash there.

I'm doing mine on a budget and only upgrading the bottom end (fingers crossed) as mine was already running cams, springs etc. I still think it'll cost me 3k when it's all done though

It's rather easy to build yourself. Just read the service manual and follow the instructions there and your good...

I had never built an engine before when I did mine 7 years ago and it's still running...

Mine's gonna be around 4k (it's being machined currently) and that's for a 'basic' forged build. Mahle Pistons, Manley rods, ARP head studs, ACL bearings, Cosworth head gasket, new gen oil pump, timing chain kit etc. full head refresh (guides, seals etc.) and the machine work is being done by a properly top notch place, so is costing a decent amount (don't wanna scrimp on that!) I'm also assembling the head myself once it's back, and having the bottom end build by an engine builder. I'll also do final assembly.

That doesn't take into account the bigger turbo I've bought, cams, injectors, ecu/mapping, clutch etc.

Also, if you're looking for parts, I got my pistons, rods, arp studs, HG, and acl bearings from Roland Alsop. They did them cheaper than I could find anywhere else by a decent amount! Be warned they are old school engineers though, not salesmen haha.

Are they any particular manufacturers to use for the piston and rods etc based on people opinions ?? I know some are similar priced.

I was hoping to achieve around 500 bhp but this maybe unrealistic on my budget , probably go to a garrett GTX 30 blower and sell my GTX2867

    how much for the 2867??

CP pistons/rods are good as are woosner / manly rods.

I went with CP pistons and eagle rods. I would have preferred cp/carillo rods as I deem them to be better but I got a deal on the eagles and they are fine for what I want.

now you get to decide if you want to alter the compression ratio.

    30 day warranty !!!!!!

I know you can build one yourself and spend that and it goes pop after 2 months, i guess its down to how much your trust yourself,

Mark I've never touched an engine but my friend has built Afew engines in the past.

Need to open it up to find out what's caused the low oil pressure .

I wouldn't buy an engine off the shelf , I'd get mine rebuilt .

Hopefully just buy the forged parts and build it over time

CP Pistons are very good quality. I have eagle rods and they are good for the money.

I've gone for cp pistons, Manley rods, cosworth mhg, arp head studs, tomei procams, prob switching to super tech springs and will likely go for acl bearings.
