    What supercar to buy?

SXers, I need some suggestions please. A good friend of mine has a nice problem and has asked me to draw him up a shortlist to test, he is stuck what supercar to buy, and I hope the knowledge on here can come up with some suggestions we have not thought of...

    Requirements :-

    1. Current daily car is a RR Phantom (previous daily was Mansory Bentley) so no RR or Bentleys
    2. Last supercar he sold a while ago was a Lambo Murci LP640 so pref not a Lambo
    3. Has also had some Ferrari's (although V8 mid engined) and not a fan
    4. Budget 200k to 300k but flexible, up to a few years old ok
    5. Running costs/depreciation not important BUT MUST have dealer or specialist in LA area for service/support

This is the best shortlist I can come up with, but I'm really out of my depth at this end of the market, so any suggestions are very welcome.

    Aston Martin Vanquish S
Pro’s – local dealer, great looking, sounding and driving, last of the V12’s and British – 0 to 60 3.5s and 201mph
Con’s – more a GT than out and out sports car

    Noble M600
Pro’s – performance, race car for road feel, 225mph
    Con’s – raw, LA dealer?

    Ferrari 599 GTB
Pro’s – V12, fantastic car, dealers in LA, holds value well
Con’s – had Ferrari before, although this is very different

    McLaren 675 LT
Pro’s – McLaren, British, stupendous performance, fantastic drive, two McLaren dealers in LA
    Con’s – erm…

I'm running out of suggestions here, I don't think he could cope with the power of a stage 2 SX, so that is ruled out

Any of the AMG Blacks still available? They're pretty exclusive, along with also looking, sounding and generally being pretty nuts...

Oh he started of with a 1.6 Capri that used almost as much oil as petrol and you could see the road through the passenger foot well!!! followed by the power of a Fiat Uno 1 litre, so he genuinely appreciates the cars he has had and access to.

Yeah, I'm not sure this is really the right forum for your question, is it? Impressive #humblebrag though Scottie

Only one I have experience of is the Vanquish, and you're correct, it's definitely more of a GT, and for a car of it's cost, the interior leaves a little too be desired when compared to competitors.
It's a lively car but by no means it and it sports car. That's the v12 Vantage type of area, which is an utterly phenomenal, visceral, face ripping, beast of a car. If that piques his interest then they're getting towards the end of their run, and Aston do tend to traditionally put out some upgraded versions when they finish their runs.
I'd say GT12, but they're all gone. You may be able to hook one SH.

McLaren 720s is an obvious choice. Supposedly a significant step up from the 650 and even the 675.

AMG Gt-R is under budget but by all accounts a very good car.

M600 may be fast but my god, they genuinely feel like kit cars. I'd be sorely miffed if I'd spent my 200k on one.

Deposit down on a new m8? Have to be patient though.

Arry, have you seen the prices of GT3RSs?! I think you'd be lucky to get much change from 200k!

My budget is approx. 5% of that for the next car, but it's nice to help out in these matters

GT3RS was one of my suggestions as well, good call, a superb car, and since his brother just got a new 911 Turbo S would be quite funny to possibly get the one of the few 911 to top that. Would also retain value well.

I have asked the supercar area on PH as well.

The feedback I've had so far : the look of the Aston is not for him, Merc's are what his wife has, and not really a supercar to him even the GT gull wing whatever. Honda just not appealing.

Noble kit car feel is not an issue, it's the dealer or support for it we can't find, his favourite car was the Noble 3R his last UK car, said nothing has matched that since for driving enjoyment.

The McLaren 675 Long Tail was the perfect car on paper, matched all the criteria and I found two local dealers in Newport Beach and Bev Hills. He was of the mind that is the one, but when going to the dealer he has left thinking it's a great car, but he didn't really love it, and for 300k he wants a car that has the want factor if that makes sense.

Hence I'm running out of suggestions!

TBF he's written off quite a bit just with his previous car history.

    Ferrari F12 would be epic.

Yep I have told him everything is downsizing and getting turbo's, just not the same, get a V12 supercar as they will become less available soon.

It's really interesting to see this end of the market, and the considerations that buyers make, whereas I'd be all about residuals and worried about running costs, it's the dealer networks that come massively into play for them. Do I like the dealership, can they collect and return the car to service with no hassle and so on.

The limited amount of experience i have though of people I personally know who buy 300k cars is that 240k is really not a significant amount to put in the bank, albeit the sample size is counted on one hand.

I have thought how on earth do you even entertain spending more on a car than a nice house is worth, and it's not just that you spend 300k, it's the ability to write off possibly 150k over 3 years on a depreciating asset (hopefully worst case) that staggers me.

A world i am a millon miles from ha ha.

Can he get a Lotus out there? Hot Exige as a left field suggestion? I might have suggested an F-Type SVR but would AWD fit the bill? Maybe not special enough either.

Looking through the list and suggestions so far I'm stumped really. As soon as Ferrari / Lambo / Mclaren are ruled out there isn't that much left to pick from!

And here I am struggling to justify 8k for an Ed30 golf haha! Fair play to him. I assume the Audi R8 is to close to a Lambo for his taste?

Errr, you know how normally cars depreciate? Yeah, err, doesn't really tend to apply that much to the upper echelons. The budget is about a quarter of what's needed for those.

I love Lotus, and in the UK he had two Esprit turbos including the V8 and they both blew up and he swore never to touch a Lotus again. SVR a good shout, again he's had an XKR-S as a daily though so scratched the Jag itch, you can see the problem here!

The logic is that once you go above about 300k you have to jump to around the million mark, and you are into P1, LaFerrari, 918 territory, and that is too much of a cost for a car to be used a few days a week.

Good shout, the sort of unusual choice and stands a chance of LA dealer as well.

We are coming to the same conclusion, so much as he wanted a change as he had an LP640 previous, the struggle to find something that meets the criteria he was going to see these two yesterday :
