    DavidRuston's S14 200sx Track/Race Car

I bought this from DSI earlier this year and did nothing with it except took it straight to the track. I bought it because the nasty jobs were already done, it needed a new windscreen but apart from that was ready to use on track.

4 track days later and it needs some TLC and a new MOT.

The day before I bought it I saw this video of it:

I found the prior owners build thread here: http://www.driftworks.com/forum/drif...ift-build.html

Update: So I have been using the car and it’s been pretty faultless. 1 incident at Lydden where I fitted a radiator cap and that turned out to be faulty. I popped home, grabbed the standard one and we carried on fine for the rest of the day.

Its been good fun to get back behind the wheel of an s14 again, and its nice and responsive. It was mapped by Martin @ MB Automotive before I bought it, but I will remap it myself once I have the new turbo & injectors fitted.

I got a new windscreen fitted the day before the MOT (£312inc VAT)

The MOT ran out in October so it went for its MOT and this was its fail list….

    1. 001 Lambda Reading After 2nd Idle to High (1.4)
    2. 002 Windscreen has obstruction inside swept limit
    3. 003 Side Lights not working
    4. 004 Indicator Bulb wrong colour (FR)
    5. 005 Indicator Bulb wrong colour (FL)
    6. 006 Side Repeater Missing
    7. 007 Side Repeater Missing
    8. 008 Registration Lamp Not Working
    9. 009 Rear Fog Lamp not Working
    10. 010 Headlamp Aim incorrect FL
    11. 011 Headlamp Aim incorrect FR
    12. 012 ABS Warning Light always illuminated
    13. 013 Nearside Rear Outer Sill Corroded
    14. 014 Offside Rear Outer Sill Corroded
    15. 015 Exhaust System not adequately supported
    16. 016 Seatbelt Anchorage area corroded (front floor)

So although the list is quite long, most of it was silly bits from where the previous owner hadn’t put back some of the lighting after fitting the wings and bumpers. I have now corrected all of the above, except the welding which is being done Monday by the local garage.

Update Other Things I have done to it so far:

I created a simple centre panel to hold the switched and boost gauge.

    • Relocated ECU to Glovebox

    • Removed Air-Con Setup
    • Fitted Side Repeaters

    • Relocated Rear Fog Lamp into driver’s side reverse light. - took the standard wiring from behind the bumper and extended it up to the boot lid. Switched to a RED bulbs and done.

    • Fitted Horn Switch
    • Fitted Japspeed 52mm Large Capacity Radiator
    • Fitted Twin Electric Fan on aluminium Shroud

    • Fitted Front & Rear Tow Straps
    • Fitted Plumbed In-Fire Extinguisher

    • Fitted FIA Electrical Cut-Off Switch
    • Fitted External Pull Cables

    • Fitted New Nissan Water Pump - whilst fitting the radiator I noticed that the old pump was weeping around the edge of the block. Probably just needed resealing as I had been cleaning that area with d-greaser so I think I might have upset the old sealant. But I figured it was a good time to fit a new pump anyway.

    Next Plans:

I have 2 more trackdays booked already and am also looking to do more sprints. I used to do the MLRSS sprints in my Evo’s and really enjoyed that.
I have bought a top mount manifold, downpipe and TiAL Wastegate setup. I plan to use this with a 3071r Turbo and some 740cc Injectors. I am after more speed down the straights and I think this setup will take me to the limits of the stock gearbox.

Hi Doc - for sure its been a few years! I got married and now have 4 children (3 x Boys 14yr, 12yr, 11yr and 1 Girl 3.5yrs). Still doing consulting for Microsoft but luckily part-time these days

Since 200's I got into Evo's, then M3's and now back to 200's as I can fix those myself on my drive. It's fun now I don't have to have one as a daily, so if it sits broken for a month I wont really care too much.

If SXOC did a Sprint Series I'd be the first to sign-up..

Update: Collected the Top Mount Manifold, Downpipe and External Wastegate bits yesterday. Now Turbo hunting.

    • CX Racing 11 gauge SR20 T3/T4 top mount manifold http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140801677207
    • Custom Downpipe/elbow with wastage return flange and two flexi's - made by H-Dev.
    • TiAL Sport F38 wastegate - Black (F38 BLACK) Pressure 1.0 bar, complete with all fittings and nuts bolts required.
    • 3 x extended braided line kit to suit top mount manifold and turbo. Two water and one oil. All in great condition
    • Full Race studs and Nuts kit, coarse threaded and fine threaded m10, nuts and washers.

Only question I have is the downpipe is for an S14a and I have an S14 - is there a difference?

I think you'll need an s14a sized downpipe to match that elbow/exhaust pipe combo the s14 one is longer or shorter

I will have a look round the for sale section.

For inspiration I have been reading about a few of the cars I remember:

    Matt_S Refresher, Bizzle's 14.5 and Mitto's S14.5 and of course Polo's 490hp+ S14

This looks like it's going to be a pretty serious build/thread!

Any interest in a trackday at Llandow in the spring? Link in my signature

    Update:
Well not much of one, but yesterday I dropped 'nost***ia' as I'm calling the 200sx down to the garage to be welded up and then re-MOT's. Hope to be out in her at the weekend for a local blast.

Found a pic of my old Sil80 with the Tomei engine that went to Mr_Steveo

    I miss those wheels - URAS NS01 I think?

Ok so some important parts arrived this week:

This morning I collected the car from RP Garage Services in Hythe (www.rpgarageservices.co.uk). Really good service, knowledgeable. Happened to bump into a fellow historical sxoc member while I was down there which was nice as well.

Freshly welded and now importantly - a solid MOT

and because I know that they go regulary, and I want to get a few in-hand for the upcoming turbo conversion:

Ordered a foot plate from Rally Design today - I am booked in for Lydden Hill on the 28th, so I have also ordered 1ltr of brake fluid as need to flush the old stuff out. On last track day when they got hotter the pedal went to the floor a couple of times until the fluid had cooled down......

A few of the 'old' guys have been in touch since I posted this which has been nice. I don't know if you met Simon who had the accident and lost his eyes, but I am helping him build his new mini. He id doing the spannering and I'm just assisting when he gets stuck, he was a mechanic before he lost his sight so he knows what he is doing.

I have gone for Brembo 5.1 race stuff that works from cold and doesn't boil easily apparently. Going to get 'nost***ia' on axle stands next Sunday and sort it.

Its cold and wet outside, the Lydden Track day got cancelled in January so I have a list of tasks to do, and no enthusiasm to do them.

    1. Put it on axle stands and flush old brake fluid out
    2. Get wheels balanced and alignment done
    3. Take of windscreen wiper to refit pull cables (had to come off for MOT)
    4. fit Passenger Foot Plate

    arrrg I hate rain.....

Wales too far for me for a trackday at the moment maybe when I get another trailer later in the year.

Trackday @ Lydden Hill on the 18th so I had to crack on and get the car sorted, blooming cold today and even snowed at one point. Anyone from SXOC going to be there?

    <>

    • Oil Change = done
    • Anti-freeze flush = done
    • Brake Fluid Flush = done
    • Coilovers Unseized & Adjusted = done
    • spacers removed from back = done - so now I have more than 4 turns of the nut holding my wheels on...

I've ordered some EBC Yellow Stuff for the front, as the DS2500 have 1 day left in them. I have Yellow Stuff at the back already.
