    S14a-S15 Spec S

thought I'd create my project thread, helps keep a note of whats been done to my car and seeing as I'm a member again why not eh....

    anyway.

I used to have a 14a which i absolutely loved,

I know certain things weren't to everyones taste but i liked it.

unfortunately it succumbed to rust but not in the usual places, the sills amazingly enough were fine as were the rear arches, the floor behind the drivers side wheel not so much but also found a flipping great big hole in the bulk head which was only found when stripping the car down...thank fcuk it wasn't involved in an accident...was less than 6" from the A pillar

    [/URL]

sooo i bought a bare shell, the only thing in it was glass, no clips, lines or anything...interestingly though the car used to belong to a very very old member on her, some might recall the number plate: R20DSX

so set about transferring everything over

Then got it to this stage..and the realisation set in despite so much being done, the thought of new brakes lines, fuel lines, and all the little time consuming things got on top

so took out the engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes etc and sold the remaining shell for virtually nothing (even delivered it too)

so scrapped the old black car and just lurked on here for best part of 3 years, until very late one evening I saw an advert on here for an S15 Spec S, wasn't a great deal of money (when compared to a Spec R) but still a fair chunk of change given I wasn't in the market for a new car at all let alone another S body, but decided to give the bloke a call.

    this was the car:

Unfortunately the wheels didn't come with it.

so struck a deal with the bloke and myself and my mate went to Devon to pick it up.

the original engine was a DE, it knocked and banged from everywhere, the body work was ok (despite being told it was amazing) but crucially the underside had been stripped and done.

so the drive back was interesting the car felt like it has 70bhp or there abouts and took 7 hrs to get back to essex :|

the car was parked up until i could afford the time to start doing things, which came 2 months later.

so early one friday evening...Rolled the car in to my mates garage.

the following morning the "fun" started :/

An inspection of the underside given I'd only seen pics of it underneath revealed a fairly good job of undersealing, it looks pretty clean underneath (one of the main reasons i bought it)

first port of call was fitting of the brakes, Willwoods with 345mm disks and coilovers

We found the previous engine wasn't even held in properly, the mounts were actually flopping about, the bolts not even finger tight which explained the horrendous knocking under load, the DE engine felt absolutely horrible too, we put that down to the timing being hugely out, i reckoned it actually had about 70bhp at most

in went in my DET engine, 555cc squirters, GT2871r etc..HDev 3a

My old S14a gearbox went on as the original one was knackered

Then an S14a prop went on (the Spec S is much smaller in dia than a S14a) with a 3.9:1 Auto S14a Diff again the original item was knackered

    Intercooler fitment

at this point wasn't 100% sure on the front wheel fitment, at certain angles they push out too far at other it looks fine, they are 18 9.5" et10 (with spacers) which I've read fit fine with 3º of camber but not sure myself....perhaps slightly narrower spacers might be a solution

Z32 rear brakes with rear wheels fitted

    Exhaust fitted

    Starting to look better

we then wheeled it out after almost 36hrs

but the thing didn't run at this point.

the looms for an S14a and S15 aren't quite plug and play, so required the two different looms to be spliced together to make one...

so half dash out to get to it:

after a few weeks the loom was completed then fired it up and it purred like a kitten.... amazing result, but revving it was another story.

long and short of it something to do with wiring was causing a the power to drop and basically the draw was too high causing it cough and splutter resulting in it being totally underivable and sat on my mates drive, was eventually sorted by Jez some 3 months later after trailering to down to him.

it remained fairly untouched as funds being quite low didn't allow for any money to be spent on it and i was supposed to just enjoy the sweat and tears that went in to it, but then the engine developed a rattle.

soooo managed to secure a decent low mileage engine, swapped it and so far so good seems to be ok.

    on went some skirts:

then fitted a universal splitter too, as it stands at the moment:

I've also taken delivery of some wheels and ill post up once fitted.

If I'm honest Dan, I should have sat down and thought about it. Would have been fairly easy and considerably cheaper to sort than the route I took.

To be fair though it was rusting elsewhere so was probably only a matter of time.

But I do miss the black one, having had these issues it's made me more paranoid about the new one mind.

Well after being cocked about by a JDM wheel supplier I've come to the realisation to get a decent set of SSR's I'm going to have to buy brand new and I'm not sure they are even made anymore plus iro 3-4k

So I bought a cheap set of wheels, they'll do for now.

    Specs
    F18x9 ET22
    R18x10.5 ET22

Just need to dial in some rear camber.
