Can the big end bearings be swapped with the engine in the car or does it need to come out?
I've got a beginning of a knock and this is the likely cause

I think it needs to come out or at least box off as the rear crank seal flange and box stop the upper oil pan being removed. Possibly even a dowel on the oil pump but cant remember.

If it's knocking the crank needs checked imo
Honestly, it's a million times easier to just pull the lot. No ****ing about removing box/subframe etc. on the floor. And if the crank is damaged, it all needs to come out anyway!
I also don't want to be the barer of bad news, but I have just pulled mine for a very light knock, crank needs a polish at the very least.
Cool, cheers for the advise guys. Can't hear the knock most of the time so can't confirm where it is. Will do some more probing and report back.

although i agree with the above (simply replacing shells won't be a long term fix, crank will ALWAYS require attention) you can physically get to them with the engine/box in. you do need to support the engine and drop the subframe though. I changed my upper sump in this manner last year.
*following this, mine started knocking 4 weeks ago
Surely if he hasn't ran it since he heard the faint knock,he will be able to throw a set of matched shells in and it will be good.aslong as the crank has
Not picked up at all/doesn't have any abrasion marks
It's been run but not much. It's parked up now. Going to do some proper investigation as it's had a sticky lifter before which most thought was rod knock. If it's bottom end it'll come apart and get forged, bay tidied and possibly painted and a few other bits and bobs done.
