Discovery 3 TDV6 - non starter (I have done something increadibly daft)

so..... after swearing off the green oval many years ago, certain I would never - ever- ever own a discovery again, after the woes of TD5 ownership and the tin worm disaster that was my 300tdi..... even the 200tdi I had first was a pain... I have gone and bought a Disco 3

best part is.... its a non starter!!

but it was increadibly, and I mean seriously cheap '57 reg HSE with leather/tv/harmon kardon terrain response etc etc.

I have receipts to show in the last 2 yrs it's had:

    both EGR valves replaced
new discs and pads all round
    prop centre bearing
    lower suspension arms all round
    air suspension struts all round
    suspension compressor
    Alternator
    rear door lock mech
    battery
    front & rear wheel bearings
    Gearbox XYZ switch
    4X Cooper AT tyres
    cambelt at 105K

It's very clean inside and out and it would be a shame to break it (although this is what I plan if the repair involves any kind of engine out)

now onto the issue it just cranks, sounds really good, as if there is no mechanical issue and spins over nice and fast.
there are no dash warning lights, glow plug lamp comes on and off as it should
no signs of immobiliser issues (red security light goes out)

looking round the internets it seems to suggest the low pressure pump may be to blame, or even a cheap derv filter causing a air lock.

the lads in our garage at work are betting on a leaky injector or crank angle sensor...

    any other ideas?

    thanks in advance

Well won't kick up on easy start, and the lpdp is working and spirting derv from the check valve....

Looks like it's going to be a typical land rover

Well.... Looks like oil pump failure and broken crank, spin the bottom pulley and the cams stay still - engine replacement time.

Luckily it was cheap enough to look at doing it and it should still come in about half what it should have cost to buy.....

Or do I break it for parts?

Tough decision - like a relapsing heroin addict I'm starting to really like the car even though I know it's bad for me

Fix the engine and you know what you have got, buy another and it is an unknown. If the rest of the car is good I'd rebuild it

The rest of the car is spot on, and it's had all the regular "issues" done within the last 2 yrs.....

I wasn't planning to buy a car, so budget is the main issue - intense googling is taking place

    Wouldnt that suggest snapped belt?

Asking on disco 3. Co.uk. - It seems that when the pulley let's go, the crank can snap from the shock...

I don't think it is the crank as there is still some resistance there off the starter.

At the moment just getting the fan off is a epic task in its self

Hopefully I'll find the pump in one piece and a failed belt - as it's got full main dealer history I will try my luck with LR for a fix

Being the landy version it will also have the one piece front cover which is an arse to remove/fit, the Jag version had a 3 piece one.

I'm hoping that the heads can come off while the engines still inside if the cranks still in one piece.

There's a really good engine place near to me that have really good rates for rebuilds, if I can get the heads done and the bottom ends ok - it's the bargain of the year....

Even if I have to shell the 3k for a replacement (indy price to drop off and have work done) it will still be less than half what the cheapest "clean" one on autotrader is advertised at

Supposedly not that bad according to the forum...

Borrowed a big drift from the work mechanics, going have a wail on the fan nut with this later - hopefully I will get the covers off tonight.

There be the issue.... Oik pump housing broken - tensioner spat off and wrecked the timing.

A well know issue that would have been rectifyed by a decent independent garage at cam belt change - instead the main dealer leaves it in for the inevitable implosion

Trying to find out if it's cheaper to get a recon engine or have this one inspected and refreshed, not looking forward to trying to pull it on the drive

Looks like a engine is in the region of 2k,

How much is a reasonable estimate to get this one refurbished?
