How would you define "Evening Wear"?

People of SXOC.... need your help

For my Birthday, I am being taken to a s****y restaurant in London and been told the dress code is "Evening Wear"

So what exactly is "Evening Wear"? Can I get away with a decent suit? Or does it require a tux? And what is Evening Wear for girls?

I would consider evening wear to be a tuxedo, a black suit and black neck tie won't do imo. I always go the extra mile and tie the bow tie myself, much nicer than a clip on. You'll need practice though as there a knack to it. Shoes will be an important part to the outfit also, a nice simple patent leather shoe with no broguing will do the trick.

Don't know what a women would wear but I assume what a classy actress would wear to the oscars would be considered evening wear.

I have just called them. Dress code is comfortable. But a dress is going to look great on her, so not saying anything... Smart suit it is

Was looking at something like this.

With a matching navy shirt and tie

    Nsfw

    Googled 'London restaurant "evening wear"'

Maybe if googled the place's names and "dress code" you could get some idea.

You really do need to check with the restaurant.

Just phone them up and ask.

Clicked on images, this caught my eye, though it's clearly NOT London.

For evening wear, I'd have said White Tie i.e. White Tie: full evening dress for after 6.0pm

Black Tails (tail coat) with satin or ribbed facings.
Black trousers with two satin stripes.
    White stiff-fronted cotton shirt.
    White wing collar.
    White bow tie.
    White waistcoat.
    Black socks.
    Black patent leather shoes.

For the lady, a full length (to the floor) gown.

Realistically, you would get away with black tie and, if it was a drinks party, the lady could wear a cocktail dress.

Things aren't so strict any more though generally.

Only place I've heard use the phrase "comfortable" is The Fat Duck and that meant "Turn up dressed as you like but we'll treat you like a twat if you turn up under dressed or properly dressed but looking uncomfortable in it. lol.

If I was going in a regular suit, I'd probably wear something Italian, dark (probably grey) with a white shirt, cufflinks and a tasteful red or light blue tie, dark socks and black leather shoes with no stitching.

White suits are considered more acceptable for med or tropical climates and not for formal dinner wear.
Coloured shirts and ties are most probably out of order.

Surely thats "dress for dinner" though? Id go with suit and tie as "evening wear", white tie and black tie would be specified. And a tuxedo is not something an Englishman wears ........

An American tuxedo is a light blue suit with a white shirt with frills down the front. definitely not something an Englishman would wear even for a bet

No. A clown suit is our equivalent.

As Doc says, if it's black/white tie then it will specifically say black/white tie.

"Evening wear", "Smart", and other such descriptions are deliberately leaving it open to interpretation, but they expect you to be copped on enough not to show up under dressed.

You'll never go wrong with a tidy suit and shoes. Something like the suit your posted would be perfect, but with pants that fit, and I presume you meant matching navy tie rather than matching navy shirt & tie?

I personally think that a mid blue suit is much harder to carry off especially with a tie. I'd rather turn up to a black tie do under dressed in a grey suit white shirt with cuffs and red tie.
I would wear a mid blue suit but only as smart casual and with a non white shirt and no tie.
I've even been known to wear a cream linen suit in the summer but with brown shoes and a yellow tie. Lol

I'll probably get flamed for this but I personally think thats all a bit much to go out for dinner. **** that shit I don't want to have to worry about what to wear and feel uncomfortable while I'm out for MY dinner party. But it's a fancy place. Yeah and? I hate suits I and I hate ties looks sleazy imho I had to be literally begged to wear a suit at my wedding. Probably because the suit to me, be it on a man or a women screams I'm a two faced lier. I have no trust or respect or integrity. I don't want to be associated with any of that. I'd pass and say can we go somewhere else if I had to pose the question what's classed as comfortable evening wear.

But on a brighter note happy birthday have a good one enjoy the night.
