VAG plug and play coil pack conversion

    Hi,

As most of you are aware good sr20 coils are getting harder and harder to find and new ones are a pretty premium. Because of problems I have had with them in the past I started using vag 1.8t coils on pretty much all of my cars with great results, much better response and generally nicer to drive and the advantage genuine Bosch coils can be bought new for as little as £26 each!

I have now been making plug and play kits in my spare time using all new plugs and wiring with a ignitor bypass so no cutting of your original Engine loom.

I have one s14 kit available but will be making more very shortly.

Am i correct in thinking the plugs for the 1.8t coils are the same as R8 coils?

The wiring is the same for the r8 coils, but there a bit of an overkill really as the standard 1.8t coils will handle 200 hp per cylinder, and don't sit as nice on an SR

I understand that they're taller, but are the electrical connections the same?

    Edit: Cheers for confirming

Very interested in this. For an S14A.

I can't remember the stock loom arrangement - how is this connected up, in terms of the igniter bypass - can't the igniter just be ditched and this loom be plugged into whatever the igniter was plugged into?

Where do i send the monies? How long will it take to make one up?

    -Dave

Hi, no the ignitor need to be bypassed either with a link lead or the plugs gut off and wires connected together.

And no coils just the loom and bypass

I'm sorry, I'm probably being thick and it might make more sense if I was able to look at the car right now, but I still don't understand the bypass thing. From the photo it looks more like an adapter?

In my very simple (and probably wrong) understanding, this is what would happen (noting my igniter has been moved from stock):

    'Looming marvellous

If, instead, the bypass is plugged into both connectors that originally served the ignitor, where do you plug the coilpack loom into?

Ah, I think I just worked it out in the shower. There must be another connector downstream of the ignitor where your loom is connected, with an intermediate bit of cable. Makes sense now.

I may however snip and solder the two ends without connectors for a slightly neater result.

The coil pack loom plugs in down the side of the inlet manifold on an s14a
If you remove the ignitor without bypassing it it won't run. It must be bypassed in order for the ecu switch signal to reach the coil. Cutting the plugs off and bridging the wires is easy enough but I should imagine a lot of people would not want to cut up there loom hence why I offer the kit with a plug in alternative 😊
