    Tow cars

So thinking of getting a car/4x4 to tow my car to tracks instead of driving

Just wondered what others are using to tow

Would want a decent car that would be more then capable of towing my s14 with tyres and spare wheels etc

So what do people use been looking at l200 discos BMW 525d touring

Info on Opinions and experience with towing would be a great help

    Cheers Rich

Land rover discoveries are one of. If not the worst car on the road in terms of reliability and cost to repair.

I made the Green oval mistake 3 times, never ever going back.

Had a hilux surf for 3 yrs that cost me less to fix in that time than I spent on 6 months tax. Really good and cheap to buy.

Currently have a Nissan terrano and can't fault it, very cheap to buy and insure... Parts are ludicrous cheap (had full exhaust for mot, turbo back £68!) only issue is the old favorite - Nissan rust bubbles on the sills, but then the chassis is solid, where as my 5yr old disco was full of rot underneath and in the floors so the Nissan is mint by comparison

I wouldn't want to tow an s14 with an estate of any kind tbh. A van or pickup truck will be more suitable. You need something with weight about it to tow a 4 wheel trailer.

    Also, check your licence entitlement.

L200's are horrendous on fuel, well early ones were (if you are looking for something cheap to buy). Hilux surfs, from what I've heard are pretty indestructible, personally I love my P38 Range Rover. Not bad on fuel, has just about every luxury you can think of, parts arent too pricey and, surprisingly, everything works. I know people have had horrible experiences with them but if they have been looked after then they are fine (same as anything really)

guess it depends on how light your trailer/ s14 is.

my worst has to be a jaguar viii in a featherlite trailer behind a 2.5di (pre banana) mk3 transit. the GTW may have been somewhere close to legal but the transit was to light and too slow.

P38 here too, not towed much but when I have its awesome, you dont even notice theres anything hitched up and its got a greater train weight than a lot of stuff due to weighing the same as the moon. No comment on fuel economy

You two must have the only working p38 in the country..

I was dead set on getting one years ago, went to look at about 15 of them - private sales and so called "LR specialists" and not 1 had more than 50% of the electrics working (central locking and windows seemed to be random for which door was fecked) and a number of them had low range issues with the box.

Manual shoguns are very reasonable on fuel and will happily tow a Car on trailer

Used to have an E46 330d touring which was a good tow car/daily driver but for frequent use I would have gone for a 530d. I've now got an X5 3.0d and towing is effortless. Lots to go wrong with them but preventive maintenance is the key.

Was thinking forester but petrol turbo are they not terrible on fuel?? And 14k would love to have that amount of money I'd have a decent specked 14 and a nice tow car and trailer for that

Are you planning on towing it on a daily commute?

Do the maths and see how it pans out. If you're expecting to drive your tow car 10k a year then maybe a factor. If you're low mileage it's unlikely to make any real difference.

Want to be able to tow it to track days so I don't have to worry about breaking things and not being able to get home after
