T28R Figures on straight cam SR20

Recently purchased a T28R (S15) turbo, was wondering what kind of boost, power and torque figures that are available from a redtop SR20DET with a T28R also is it possible to have the internals of a T28R upgraded to push power reliably. Thanks.

I wouldn't burn any money on modifications to them. Mine made close to 300hp and around 400Nm torque at 15 psi boost. They aren't happy with much more than this, the map isn't tall enough and the efficiency plummets. The bearing cages etc are pretty good under most conditions if fed with the right amount of oil and there are no issues with the cooling circuit.

I thought I had a power plot on my photobucket but if I did it's gone walkies.

From memory it was holding peak power from 5600 rpm to 6500 rpm give or take with full boost available in the mid 3000s.

They are more responsive and achieve peak boost sooner on VVT engines due to the extra low speed overlap available.

Pretty much all of what Zeppelin said really.

They're an excellent match for the SR and push a decent 300BHP all day long, if you want more power then look at a bigger turbo and possibly one of the newer GTX range.
The 2871R was always a favourite, there is an equivalent in the new GTX range.

Looking for no more than 350bhp really, just wondered how good they are and if the internals of the turbo could be customised at all. Just want a decent spool up time, don't want so much lag

You will never get one to 350, get a 2871 or equivalent.

Id be happy with 300-320bhp just want an optimum turbo, i think a 2871R would have too much lag.

T28R it is then, it already spools really well.

It worth getting rebuilt with stronger internals billet wheels and better bearings? Im looking for a pretty quick responsive but reliable SR20 set up.

No, use it as it is. I got 305 out of mine at 17psi and all the other stage 2 bits.

The only things you could do to improve response would be some alterations to cam timing, but you would need a custom map and some fiddle time to get that to work. Notionally advancing the intake cam will improve spool up response, but you will lose out a little at peak power doing that.

Owen do an upgraded bearing housing for them, don't know if they'd retrofit it though. Someone on DW said they got 320 bhp and 380lbs/ft (515nm). Not seen any more details than that. I was seeing a bar below 3000rpm on a CA with a ported head and lower compression ratio.

A GT2871r is not laggy. For response, consider a GTX2860 or the equivalent.

An S13 with 300bhp and high response turbo makes for a very rapid road car. You can aim for more power but you will lose that response. I ran a single hks gtss on my sr20 and it made consistent 305bhp and over 300ft pounds of torque. It was a great, useable road car package.
