    CAS help?!

Hey guys, I'm attempting to remove my Ca18det's head, but I can't for the life of me get the CAS to move at all! It won't go left, right, forwards or back.. Even with some (lots of) persuasion.

Any ideas? This does need to be removed in order to get the timing belt cover off yes?

im sure the cas just bolts to the front cover, so if you take all the front cover bolts out you should be able to pull the cover off with the cas still attached.

Ah nice one! I've taken everything I can see out but the cover won't come off (hence why I assumed the CAS needed to come off), but I'll check again tomorrow to make sure I haven't missed a bolt

Sounds like is seized to the cam splines. Normally you can unbolt the 3 bolts and it pulls off. As said though you could in theory pull the cover off and CAS will come with it but as it's seized you'll still have to pry/bash it off.

CAS get a bit of wood or alloy and tap it round a bit and then back and forth. Shot of penetrating oil - not WD40 that is water dispersant.

Upper cam cover. Have you done the 10mm hex head bolts that go in from the back though the backplate? One at each top corner.
2 more 10mm hex head bolts from front lower down at outside edge.

Cheers, I'll give that a go in the morning! yeah I've removed all the bolts on the timing cover, hopefully once I manage to remove the CAS, it just slips off!

Try & pull it out as square as possible, If you pry it left & right you might snap the locating pin in the end of the cam....As I did!

Hasn't snapped but the splines on the cam are badly worn and the cas splines are worn a bit.

All the dust is evidence that they are worn aswell.

Okay, well at least it's not snapped haha. How bad is it that they're worn? How do I fix it?

If you were to sell it, what would you want for it?

Or do you know where can I get a replacement? I can't find one that isn't an upgrade part

Basically worn cas or cam splines will cause your timing to wander ie- not stay at 15degrees and when coming to set your timing you'll find that the cas will be over to one side rather than near central on the slots.

Usual cause of worn cas or cam splines is timing cover missing the dowels therefore incorrect alignment of cas and cam.
Also on the cas spindle there should be an o-ring which if missing can cause wear.

From your pic the cas isn't the worst i have seen but is slightly worn and your exh cam is quite badly worn.

Fair enough, cheers! The CAS itself is completely seized to the timing belt cover, so no chance of it moving itself haha, but I think I'll replace the cam anyway!

You will need to remove it to set the timing properly!

Try tapping it out gently from behind (not by the spindle tho)

Failing that could butcher the cover and fit another i also have a spare timing cover you can have for a fiver!

i would suggest a new cas too. as stated and movement in any of the above results in timing being all over the place and it can wonder as you try to set timing and without it timed up properly it wont be fun to drive

Looks like the little O-ring on the CAS isn't doing it's job, let a bunch of moisture in and rusted the CAS in place
