    standard wheel coating

does any one know what the hell did Nissan use to coat the crappy standard wheels? it is the best most hard wearing powder coat in the universe. every other manufacturers wheels seem to corrode/fall apart after a few years but these damn wheels always come up good with a bit of soapy water.

god damn Nissan why could he have not coated the entire car in the magic coating.

For both the S13 4-studs and the 16in S14 5-studs, they were painted and lacquered I thought.

The chrome plated wheel nuts also appear to be made of indestructium as mine still come up mint after 23 years.

hmmmn maybe they are painted, I will give one of the beater ones I have a bit of a sanding. if they are painted as you say I will get white dust from the clear coat.

ive only ever had wheels stove enamelled in black so cant really recall it as a comparison as it was 10+ years ago, I do recall bashing one with a copper hammer when tightening knock on wheel nuts, and a massive chunk of coating coming off.

If you're in no rush, I'll ask the guy doing my paint next week. He'll know

yeah sure, ask away, the more opinions the merrier.
I have about 20 of my drifting wheels that I have been refurbing. so the eventual plan is to get them all coated in the same colour (white) I was just fishing for what would be the best coating for me as they will get knocked about.

I've been refurbing wheels for a while now...

Up until a few years ago, most wheels used to be wet painted and lacquered. More recently, manufacturers have started to powder coat. Powder coating works completely differently in that it has to be baked at temperatures in excess of 180Deg. It's thicker and more durable. How long it lasts in the end is really down to how they get treated. If they are constantly bashed then you don't stand a chance.

It can be quite hard to sand sometimes but the best way to remove the paint is chemical stripping, obviously not everyone can do that.

Chrome on the other hand is even tougher, only way to remove chrome is to reverse the chroming process. I know because I tried to chemical strip and sand...wasted my time!

my hatred for chrome stems from knock on wheel spinners,

spraying wheels is a bit of a chore if you don't have a wheel stand. I would have to do the rears, then flip them over and do the faces (in the past Ive balanced them face up on an old paint tin). I would get them sand blasted to remove old coatings first as a lot of them have a good dose of gravel rash.
Then I would have to acid etch, filler prime, sand, then colour coat.
I have about 20 wheels to do.

a place not far away (bourne powder coaters) or (city powder coaters) advertise as doing wheels for £20 each, blast and coat but I had a rocker cover done by them ages ago and it had a massive run on it that they didn't seem too bothered about so im loathed to hand £400 to them out of principal.

Powder coating isn't a panacea though and it also involves blast, prime, colour coat and clear coat (if you want shiny). If they do 1 wheel for 20£ don't expect quality. Having said that, a decent place should do you a decent discount on a job lot.

£20 to powder coat one wheel? Bargain if you ask me. Accept that quality may not be great but when you consider the process, it's not bad.

Normal process would be remove tyres, chemical strip, prep/repair, media blast, powder coat (primer/colour/lacquer/etc), refit tyres, balance.

Going rate is £50 (plus vat) for 16/17" wheels.

a good 5 years ago I had a set of the 16" mondeo wheels (that look like escort cossie ones) done in sparkle silver drive in drive out somewhere else for £120 including new metal valves but they corroded after a year or two and that car did no more than 3k per year so sat on the drive spotlessly clean most the time as it was my old mans car. I got them done as they used to go flat all the time.

these ones would just be done in bog standard white no fancy pants stuff as fancy pants don't seem to suit the car.it was mainly something that was hardwearing that I was after as they tend to get knocked around, then look poo and detract from the car. I have my own tyre machine so am covered for that aspect.

A drive in drive out process wouldn't be powder coating...probably normal wet paint.

I'd go for the Powder coating at £20 a pop. I cure my powder coats at anywhere between 180-195 Deg so I'd say they are pretty tough/durable!

Why can't powdercoating be done as a DI/DO process ? Only needs the removal of wheels from car.

Apologies let me clarify... Yes can be done as a DIDO process, I was really thinking of time. I don't think it can be done in a day, normally takes a couple of days. maybe there are people out there that can turn it around in a day? Wheel has to be stripped then prepped. Then in the oven for primer, then in again for lacquer, then cooled, then fitted back. Lot to do in one day.

Ah yes. I see. You mean it would need the car to be left for a couple of days so not a while-you-wait service. Makes sense.
