Just a quick question as I saw a post but can't find it now.
Are the brackets that support the intake manifold vital? I read something about them being useless and to leave them off but I can't help think they must have been deemed necessary.

some people take them off to help get access to the starter motor etc...
tbh I took the lower ones off and just kept the two small top ones.

Same here. Took the big "upside down A" shaped bracket off years ago to help fit a new starter motor and never got round to re-fitting it, had no problems with it. Or rather without it.
TBH mine were removed when I went on a weight saving quest.
My usual take on these things, a trained and qualified engineer who knows more than me decided they were needed. Far more importantly he persuaded an accountant to pay for them.

These brackets are not just there for fun.
The cornflakes-box-style gaskets at the inlet can start to leak when you take them away, which is a nasty fault to trace and even more nasty to repair.
Your car will be more reliable when you keep them.
If you want to get rid of them anyway, make sure to re-tighten all nuts and bolts keeping the plenum to the head (and they're a lot).
I've been driving since years without any bracket, no problems yet
