Struggling to insure ordinary cars with Sky, Flux etc etc

    rant

I cant be the only person in this situation.

Like a lot of you my S14 is a weekend / occasional use car. I have a daily mile muncher for work.

I understand Sky, Flux, Greenline and more all specialise in sports and modified, but why does it make them SO uncompetitive for standard cars?

All of the specialist insurers I have dealt with offer mirroring of NCD / some form of discount if you insure a second vehicle with them, and two years in a row now I have had an insurer explicitly use this fact to try tempt me into insuring the Nissan with them.

And both years, they have outright declined (or been miles off the mark) for my quote.

Last year, I wanted to insure a boring Honda Accord. Had my S14 policy with a well known specialist insurer with 3yrs NCD, so gave them a call.

    Refused to insure it.

Swapped it for a 325 BMW. Thankfully, just one(!) of their underwriters offered to cover it. at 1.5 times the cost of my modified S14 with all mods declared.

Fast forward to this week. Currently have my Nissan insured with a different company. Again, all mods declared, 4 years NCB.

Wanted to insure a new Astra (leased) as im earning a bit more and doing more miles. Sorry, that will be nearly twice the price of your S14, and at least a third more than what Compare the Market quoted. Is that because its a leased car, I asked? No, its because its standard and boring. And this is from an insurer who supposedly covers ALL vehicles, and reassured me so when I insured the S14.

Just seems confusing to me, as it stands to reason that most people insuring something sport or for limited use, probably have another vehicle.

My sister had the same issue when I referred her to my insurers to insure her Zafira. They wouldn't insure it as it was standard. I told her to fit a K&N panel filter as then it'd be "modified" and they'd insure it. She didn't want to do that so went elsewhere.

Not had that problem with my cars though. My insurer who insures the S13 insures my daily driver and that's standard, they're always cheaper than anywhere else as well. Costs more than the S13, but it's a lot newer, worth more (sort of) and parked on the road while the S13 is tucked away safe and not used as much either. Strange that it's not the same for you.

Struggling to insure ordinary cars with Sky, Flux etc etc

I used to insure both mine with flux as they mirror ncb. It's a load of shite tbh because I used to get much better quotes for the daily from other people. Considering flux were supposed to be mirroring 10 years and the others only worked with 1 year!

I've got the silvia with a plan and the Passat with Hastings now

I don't have any issues and I've got my s14 skid car and transit both insured with flux, they're the cheapest on both. Can't mirror no claims though as ones commercial and ones domestic

Huh, I just renewed the Nissan with Flux and even with 4yr NCB they want £800 for a new poverty-spec Astra. Putting the same details into compare the market with zero NCB is around £600.

    Hi,
I'm sorry if you have been frustrated with ourselves in the past with insuring "standard vehicles" Whilst we do obviously specialise in the more non-standard areas we are trying hard to be more competitive in the more standard ones.
    Regards,
    Dan.

Specialist insurers will never get close on standard cars as its not what they do, its why they are called specialist insurers End of the day they are a broker that work with a number of companies that only insure modified and performance vehicles. If you have a 'normal car' just go on go compare etc.
