    How much play in driveshafts

I've got a tereble clunk from the rear when changing throttle from gentle acceleration to overrun if you tap the throttle quickly on and off repeatedly it makes a horrendous noise

I've jacked the car up and watched the diff outputs while moving the wherl and there is quite a bit of slop in them like a good 5-10 degrees back and forth before the diff moves at all

I bought some used shafts as I can't find any new/remanufactured one and there almost the same as mine

    So two questions

    How much play is acceptable

Anyone know who can remanufacture my spare ones

    Thanks

Ive needed to replace shafts in the past because of knocking. Ive had one nearly break through. Will see if i can find the pic. There should be very little play really.

I thought maybe a degree of movement for expansion but these seem excessive and was quite surprised when the others I got had virtually identical play

I pulled off the boots to replace the grease and they don't look worn but there is a defiantly movement where the outer roller move and connect to the outer casing but I'd expect it to be worn in the centre of the casing where it's most used but it's the same at the extremities

Did you just buy used shafts or get yours rebuilt

It could be that the casting is opening slightly with the pressure from the balls making the groove larger?

I get a clonk when changing gear at slow speeds, also if i'm low speed the car sometimes rocks back and forward a bit off throttle, i've got a little play in my drivers side output shaft, the actual driveshafts are fine but the output shaft from the diff is knackered. I'm guessing that's a specialist diff rebuild i need to get done?

Are you sure its not just the crownwheel and pinion back lash? I had an s14 that did the exact same thing under light load, deceleration etc.. I pulled the diff unit out and got the preload/backlash reset, it cost about £100 and then it was perfect afterwards.

There may be a little in there but all this play is before the diff output flange even moves

Thats the thing, i don't think there was from memory. It had just broken the casting.

I don't remember seeing anything like that on mine but will double check them after seeing that

Is it just as simple as undoing the 6 m8 bolts on the diff and the hub nut and tapping them out the bearing ?

Yeah mine came out farly easy with a hardwood drift to knock it, sometimes they can be rusted in though. 6 bolts are tight as usually.
