    Don't panic

Emily Thornberry last night said The Labour Party isn't finished and will win the next General Election under Jeremy Corbyn!

For once, I took her seriously.

It seems Gove shafted Boris by suddenly announcing he was going to go for the job after originally promising to back Boris.

Boris had no chance if Gove stood and took his supporters with him.

My wife shared an interesting thought with me...What if Boris started his own centre-right party with Daniel Hannan, Katy Hoey and some of the other "thinking" leavers ? Nature abhors a vacuum....

Were you drinking at the time.
The only thing Corbyn has a chance of beating is the queue at the jobcentre.

When Corbyn buggers off with his hard-left supporters the Labour party will look sensible again. Wurzel is just hanging on until Chilcot next week so he can have a final Stop-The-War rant.

Owen Smith would be decent up against Theresa May. Best thing Labour and Lib Dems could do is form a pact where they don't compete each other in marginals with the Tories.

After being shafted Boris can cause lots of trouble from the back benches or more likely bail-out when an election comes.

We need the centre and right of Labour to split and form a party with the centre and left of the Conservatives. Then we'd get a sensible party full of the best politicians and leave the left and right wing lunatics to their own parties.

Sort of like the Social Democrats did ?

    That worked out well

I do agree with you though. It should be made up predominantly of Leavers though

This time it would be 170+ MPs splitting off instead of 30 odd. The new party would become the official opposition and if no election until 2020 there's time to build a new brand. Merger with the Lib Dems would be good as most of their votes are wasted.

Still a pretty big risk to ditch the Labour name and risk losing union donors. Just a matter of time before Corbyn quits though, he couldn't run a school tuck shop with the MPs he left with.

Leaver or non-leaver is surely irrelevant now, it's who can make the best of a bad job and sell it to the public.

Tim Montgomerie has proposed this party realignment:

The problem is that over 90% of the current MPs think leaving is a shit idea and political suicide for any career politician. I think you'd struggle to find 50 let alone 170 MPs who'd have the will to help this country get back on its feet.
If a group of them get together and gain the backing of the populace to steer us out in an orderly fashion then 50 yrs from now they could be almost as famous as Churchill !

    Oh yes !

They haven't quite declared war on us yet. Give it time and Farage and they might do

Time for a graph Support for the two big parties has been in decline since the 1950s, first by Liberals, now nationalists (UKIP/SNP) on the left and right. Politics hasn't been this messy for a century.

Confidently predict Theresa May will be no good (only last a year or two) and we'll end up with a deal that nobody likes. Even if there's a backlash and a strong, charismatic centre-left leader won power it'll probably be too late, damage done.
