    Which RB and Why?

    Howdy peeps,

I've been looking into swapping in a new engine into my Z31, but I can't make my mind up which variant to go for?

Things I am considering are cost, power potential, weight and reliability.
Power goals will be around 500bhp with potential for 600bhp.

I'm swaying towards the RB20 at the moment, but I haven't fully researched its tuning potential. The last thing to consider will be what gearbox?

The old addage "there's no replacement for displacement" comes to mind. An rb20 will be highly strung at 5-600hp. The rb26 has a better head than a rb25 so revs better and breathes better.

Or you could go rb30 but it's alot of work

    Think I'd go RB25DET neo

Stick a metal head gasket in it, big injectors and a GT30

RB internals on the 25 are good for about 500 but for piece of mind id forge it, then go fro a aftermarket ECU and injectors and turbo and your be laughing

From personal experience the neo is a pain in the arse.

Thanks for the info dudes... I'm finding it near impossible to find a RB to Z31 crossmember so it's looking like I might build the VG30 and go for a VG33det.

    Which RB and Why?

Can't you just use an rb crossmember and mod it to fit or get some custom engine mounts made up?

    Something like this?

I actually looked at that kit, but unless it's tried and tested, I don't like taking the risk. After loads of reading up, there is a lot of junk out there in the Z31 scene.

For the time being, I think I'll do some basic engine performance mods and look at getting the body and suspension sorted this winter. I'd like to get the S13 subframe and maybe a new diff in place.

My mate is running a ~600bhp rb20 that was built by zarowski performance and mapped by greg at protuner.

Maybe worth dropping them an email?

Hi mate, if I end up getting an RB crossmember sorted, that would be really handy bud.

    VG30 is such a **** engine.

Go for an RB25DET. Forget 600. Build for 500 and keep your build cheaper, simpler and less stressed. Nothing you can do with 600 that you can't with 500.

Curious what makes you say that?

TBH, I wasn't keen on it, but after doing a lot of research I've read nothing but good things about it. I'd like to hear the counter argument against it though.

It'll help me burn off my squad on highway pulls.

So, I just asked on a Z31 group on Facebook if the VG30et was honestly any good and it appears they have taken offence to such an honest question.

Very hard to work on because there's so much stuff hanging off it. Doesn't make particularly great power out of the box and limited, expensive tuning.

A VQ35 responds very well to being blown and isn't a bank breaking engine anymore. Abbey Motorsport are building a PS13 with a Blown VQ35 at the moment. Gearboxes are tough as anything but getting more expensive because of S Bodies.

If you can spend a little extra get the later Neo motor with long nose crank. (S2 neo)

If you have allot of budget rb26

For the 25 you will want a forward facing plenum or be able to weld your own very long intercooler pipework.

You can buy plenums that let you attach RB26 ITB's to RB25's as well.

Priman can you send me a link to one of these plenums as I have spent months building adapter plates to run rb26 ITB'S and plenum on my rb25. Including modifying the injector angle because of the extra spacing from the plates. Just curious if all my work was for nothing haha
