heater stuck on on

quick one, before i go buy the heater control unit;

my heater in the car is a bit moody, sometimes it works as it should and keeps the temps as directed, and then half the time it seems to be stuck on on/hot, even though the control unit is turned off. if i turn it on and then on cold it'll blow cold again. im thinking the heater control unit is dodgey? the buttons are super hard to push also. the sensor above the gear gaitor is plugged in and fine, fuses are all good too. anyone have this before and would getting a new heater unit be a good start?
