Non-accident damaged CAT D - How is that possible ?

A car popped up on my ebay feed as it fit an old search I have saved.

The car is a CAT D and they are claiming that it has NEVER been damaged in an accident.

Apparently, they have documented evidence from the insurer that the car was written off after a rat chewed through three wires above the petrol tank.

Bearing in mind that this is a £50K car, how can it have been uneconomical to repair it even if you had to completely dismantle the car ?

I've also puzzled a bit about how was it the responsibility of the insurance company to pay for the fix. I'm guessing damage by wild animals would be covered under an insurance policy but I've never seen it in a policy document.

    Anyone any thoughts ?

p.s. I'm not going to be buying it, even though its cheap.

Is it a 50k car now or when it was new? i.e is it now a 10k car and it happened recently? Maybe they replaced the whole loom as if it went through the insurance they wouldnt just splice the wires.

Part of my job is putting categories against accident damaged cars, I wouldn't question this for a second, perfectly normal. To be honest if anything, we usually put a B on anything pest damaged, because like flood damage, you can't ever be sure how much other stuff has been damaged. Yes you know the rodent has had a go at that bit of wiring loom, but what about seat foams you can't see, carpet underlay, other wiring which could now be exposed and ready to touch and cause a fire?

I condemned a 2015 Mitsi Shogun last month because a rat had got behind the dashboard and had a go at the loom. Cat B.

    Impressive work from the rat.

Not sure why the owner would have gone through the insurance??

Probably because most people don't have the first clue when it comes to cars, it's not uncommon for people to think AA/RAC cover means someone will come to their house and do general maintenance on a vehicle for them.
I'm sure as soon as the F-Type didn't start they were onto the insurance instead of having it trailered to a specialist and sorted out.

More fool them, especially if they had it on finance and didn't take gap insurance or similar.

I'm sure the insurance company were right in making it a Cat-D, like Jonnay said without taking the car apart and inspecting absolutely everything how will they know what other damage could have been done?

You'll probably find a repairer wouldn't guarantee a job on it as they would have to strip the entire car to component form in order to guarantee there was no further unseen damage which could crop up at any point in the vehicles life and be re-directed to them as they had "missed" it.

Which I imagine is why they put it through the insurance.

I thought CAT D was 60% of the value to repair ?

If its a £50K car, that means they were quoted more than 30K to strip and replace a few wires. I think that is what I'm really struggling with.

@Mark - You're being pedantic about the prices. The point is its not an 8K car, its an 80K car. An S isn't 60K either once you've spec'ed a convertible one up. Basic price is £68K for an auto drophead like the one on ebay. Add paint, seats, brakes and wheels and you're in the mid-70s at least. I speced one up and it came out at £87,255 and no, I didn't tick all the boxes.

My point was more its not particuarly cheap for a CAT D. If you can get clean ones for £40k then i would expect not to be paying more than 30K for something that might be a pain in the arse to shift later.

Convertible S's are typically going for between 45 and 50K.

This is 35K so is 10-15K cheaper.

40K will only get you a regular F-Type or an S with a lot of miles on it.

Cost of repair and pre-accident values are only a part of what decides what category a salvage car falls into.

Ultimately it often comes down to a bit of common sense from the assessor, and sometimes a bit of a push from the salvage yard where it ends up, as the category swings how much it will cost them to buy (to sell on at auction or out of their yard, whatever).

But they want 25K for it ! You can buy an undamaged 2012 XKR with the same spec for the same money and save yourself the 10K it would cost to put right and the other 10K you won't get when you sell.

Insurers paid out £44,420.00 to the past owner for our one

£25k is ono, tough car to price up as a repairable really

An uncrashed 2014 xkr is worth 44.5. An ftype can be had for that money so main reason to buy an xkr is to put your kids in the rear seats. Where is the mileage in buying a stoved in xkr, getting it repaired and finding it hard to sell for less money and the worry if it not being fixed right when you can get one that's 2 yrs older and not a cat d. Just saying.

You could have ours repaired and on the road for under £35k realistically. That's 10k under the book price, and a lot of money to most people. Not sure how much the previous cat D would knock off the resale value I must admit - that's not within my area of knowledge.
