    Definitive Answer - Gearbox Oil

I have read lots of threads now, and still havent found an answer to the ideal gearbox oil, as of today.

So specs are: 75w90 GL4, and isnt stiff into first and second.

Genuine Nissan - is now 75w80 or 75w85, and is not suitable.
Millers - is GL4 and GL5 compatible and therefore not recommended.
Triple QX (from ECP) - is GL4 and GL5 compatible and therefore not recommended.
Motul 300 - is GL4 and GL5 compatible and therefore not recommended.
Mobil - is GL4 and GL5 compatible and therefore not recommended.
Comma - stiff first and second
Castrol - stiff first and second
Fuchs Titan - stiff first and second

Redline Lightweight Shockproof seems to meet specification, but is £19.96 per quart (not even a litre), which seems a bit steep.
There is another Red Line product at £16.96 a quart, still on the steep side.

Gulf - is this good to go? £14.95 a litre.

Is it literally Red Line or Gulf that are any good for our gear boxes?

    Cheers guys

Apparently we cant use it if it is both GL4 and GL5 as it still contains something that can wear the material in the box, has to be stand alone GL4, however have just read another thread where 2-3 people rate comma, and is sold at Halfords so might give that a punt

Ive opened a technical case with Nissan themselves through a Retailer. If i have any luck ill let you know. Might be worth buying a drum there seems to be a high demand for it on these forums!

I was also going to say ask Opie. I have been getting gearbox and diff oil from them since they started on here and it runs spot on.

From Red Line oils you can use only MT90, all the others are GL5.

How often do you change GB oil?
I think its worth it going for Red Line.

Just had a call back from the Retailer who have had a reply from Nissan technical.

They only have 75w80 or 75w85 in GL4.
They have a 75w90 GL5 but this is for the diff and not the gearbox.

So genuine Nissan is out the window.

Nope, I have a short shifter fitted too with a extended ally gear knob, the shift is lovely. I have just flushed it out after a year and around 6k miles of hard use ready to put some more in.

Why cant you use the 75w85?

Cold protection is the same, its just a bit thinner when hot. And if its GL4/5 it just means means you can use it in gearboxes and diffs so is more universal. If it meets the GL4 spec then it meets it.
